Big white bump on fish!

Okay, I recently got a purple firefish. After it was in my tank, I noticed a raised white bump on it on the main body but near the top fin. I thought at the time that it was a bite from a clownfish because they were harrassing the new arrival.

A couple of days later, I noticed the bump was still there, but moved down about a quarter of an inch. The bump was white, pretty big (1/8" x 1/16"), and raised slightly. There looked to be no damage on the fish where the bump used to be. And the fish was acting fine, not breathing heavily and not scratching himself against the rocks.

Today, another couple of days later, I started looking closely at the spot. The fish was cooperative, and he stayed close to the glass. I swear I saw the white bump shift from one direction to the next. This freaked me out a bit, and I kept watching. Then I noticed one side of the white bump come up off the fish for a second and go back down. At this point I knew it wasn't "in" the skin, but "on" the skin.

I got the fish out and did a three minute FW dip. After three minutes, the white bump slid around on the fish's skin and fell off. Got my fish back in the tank.

Sorry, but I do not have pics, but what could it have been? My first assumption was a fluke, but I read on the forums that you cannot really see them until they fall off and they are a lot smaller than the thing that fell off my fish. The fish is still hiding in his rock, but seems to be okay.

Could have been a parasitic isopod. They are nasty little creatures that host on a fish. Good thing you got it off, sometimes you have to use tweezers and manually pull it off the fish. Imagine how much fun that would have been.

It was definitely wierd . . . something I have never seen before. When I put the fish in the FW bath, the fish went really lethargic. Enough that I could basically rub the fish with my fingers. After a couple of minutes, once I saw the "white bump" slide easily, I rubbed the fish a couple of times with my fingers, and the "white bump" came off. Everything is fine since I put the fish back into the tank. Hopefully, this is the last I will see of anything like that.
