Bimaculatus anthias, who has them?

Mine havent settled in long enough to show aggression. They spend their day hiding from the big bad Angel Fish.
The male and Female hang together very closely. No aggression between them.

What's up Maximus!? How are the frags... and those interuptus!? I head to Hawaii and Guam next month with work and have been in touch with the breeder (Frank Baensch of RCT Hawaii for those who don't know) and I'm meeting up with him if I have time as I'm just in Oahu for two days. Small world and great to see you hear... we share the passion for the odd and pricey!

Hef, beautiful male! What LFS? I grew up in Jersey and worked at a LFS while in high school and summers in college.

I've now had my bimacs (pictured on the previous page) for over a month and they continue to amaze me... the male feeds more like a grouper, taking in sometimes big chunks of gel based block foods that no other anthias would touch... I feed twice a day and they seem to be fine...

Aside from the week to settle in, I continue to be surprised at how well these guys are doing... far from the class of the ventralis and tukas...

Tom, Liveaquaria has gotten the males a couple of times, but they sell fast, and often don't last long enough to receive the e-mail update, so check regularly and order quickly...

I've ordered from Liveaquaria countless times, including two of my regal angels, and they really are top notch...

Hey John,
All the frags are doing great. The superman danae has grown tremendously and it may be time to frag! Do you plan on getting some interruptus from Frank? That would be great if you are! I can't wait to get my Anthias! Btw, what size tank do you have now?

I plan on it in the future, depending on what species he has in a while. I spoke to him a while back and he was working on C. joculator. Funds are fairly tight (no money for sure now for a $1200 pair of fish) as we have a 10 day old baby (our first!) and the new house for 9 months in the ridiculous real estate market here in the DC area. Right now my display with the bimacs is a 180, but the place its in was made for a ~ 600 gallon display tank that is not too far out. Behind the scenes I have another 300 gallons on this system, including a 6 foot frag tank that I also use to condition some of my fish. I also have a 2x54 double corner system that I'm finally getting going since the move, that will house two clownfish pairs (chrysogaster and my onyx percs), and some time in the future a pair of CB Centropyge TBD from Frank. Here are some more shots I took two nights ago under actinics only with flash... you could see the bimacs are now confortable tagging the turkey baster in the tussle with the other fish... Man do I love those interuptus though...

Off topic... anyone coming to MACNA here in DC in September?

My LFS is a place called Tropiquarium (Ocean Township). Been there forever, getting some nice stuff lately. They had some Ventralis Anthias also when I got mine. Look nice but look extremely shy & fragile. Might not do well in my tank.

Hey John,

My buddy and I are heading down to MACNA. My freind conveniently lives right in ArlingtonI beleive its only a few minutes from where he lives). This will be my first MCNA and I m looking forward to it....How close are you to the MACNA?

Nice pics...I was following this post for awhile.

Beautiful pictures John.

Any advice on getting the Regals to eat? And did you get them all from mail order or were you able to see them eat before you purchased them? I understand from your TOTM thread (well deserved)that the first one you observed.

I have two Bimac females in with five female squami and one male squami. I did not have harem or male aggresion (that I observed)in the squamis but I did not have a congregation either. When I put the bimacs all 8 fish began swimming together all the time almost immediately. They must be acting as referees. I got that piece of advice from one of the heavy anthia keepers on the forum. Forgive me for not giving credit where credit is due if you read this.

Phil

Thanks again all... let's see some more pics of these guys in your tanks!

Curt and Phil, regarding the regals check out the regal angel thread in this forum for good info. I posted a long response on page 25 (it's now on page 26) with alot of my recent info on these guys... I don't want to tie up this thread too much. Curt, I test all angels in my frag system to see there affinities for certain corals and condition them. My general experience with large angels and sps picking is to stay away from small juveniles, as they are most likely to target sps polyps to eat. My sub-adult chrysurus I grew from a tiny juvenile that a while back not only picked on sps polyps, but ate them. After over a year, I tried him in with sps again and he now does fine. There is occasional picking, but no targeted eating... it's really too much work for such a small reward, and usually they taste a few things when first introduced, eventually preferring to get hand fed, as my lazy sixline now does... I've ordered two regals from Liveaquaria and the others I bought locally. Again, Liveaquaria is a great company...

Brisk, I live about 45 minutes from where MACNA will be, and our local club is hosting it (WAMAS). I'll be helping out, and should be there all three days (I get back from a business trip to Guam and Hawaii the day before it starts). I'm very excited for this... Brisk you're welcome to come by one of those nights with your buddies... to do what we all do best... BS about this great hobby!:)

Hi John,

That sounds really cool. I am actually part of a club as well. www.sv-sea.org I think I saw somewhere a pic of Sanjay by your tank(your tank looks amazing!) Sanjay has spoken in our meetings before. Great to listen to his talks. I love that PSU tank he maintains, cooincidentally it was our class gift to the university when I graduated there! I can PM you with my info...my buddy who is coming down has a 180 as well. We would both love to get some great insite on a former RC TOTM winner!

Thanks,

Chris

Well, they're in!! One actually posed for pics for a long time. The other hid asap. Now, they are both hiding. I hope they do well.

It's a small reef world Chris... I met Sanjay a few years ago when he spoke at a meeting of ours. We've since met up a few times... I've been to his house a couple of times and to see the Penn State tank. We recently spent a day together and exchanged some frags at my house. I finally got a piece of that HUGE purple milli from the PS tank among other things... Give me a holler closer to MACNA and you guys are welcome to come by the house...

Thanks John. Damn, these fish wont come out at all. Hell, I dont even know where they are! They hide real good. Did your anthias show the same behavior? I even fed them live brine and cyclopeeze. Nothing.

That's completely normal... a good week before they start venturing out, and another before they are comfortable in the open... soon they'll be attacking with the rest of the bunch...

Btw, they sort of remind me of a cross between a Sunburst and a Squammi. What do you guys think?

That's like comparing Mcguire or Bonds before and after the steroids... No cpmparison!:D
