bio balls

can you tell by looking at it, the di unit is clear. I have only had it for about 5 months, but I did a 50% water change on my 120, have done 10 gal water changes about every other week ( I know already, it is not enough, lol, I need to do better, but my tank is doing great, but I know it could change over night) I also add ten gallons a week due to evaporation.

If your DI is not a color changing unit then use a TDS meter to check if the DI is exhausted. If you are getting higher then ~5 ppm of purified water your DI resin needs replaced.

If you are wondering about the other filters a good rule of thumb for the sediment and carbon would be every 6 months. If you want to actually check their usable life you will have to check the pressure before/after. If there is a noticable pressure drop they need changed.
