OK - One of the fans in the hood is making allot of noise. I remember reading somewhere that a few people have this problem. Is there any easy fix or do I need to go to Oceanic - tank is 2 months old at best.
 
When my fan makes noise, I slap the top of the hood, over the fan a few times before it turns silent.. Thats my DIY :)

Rob, you can remove the stock hood, open the lights, remove the heat shield for the fans and clean them. I had the same problem. I went to nanotuners.com and bought the 144w upgrade that came with the fan upgrade as well. When I took the fans apart man they were dirty! I cleaned them from the outside but it's not like cleaning them from the inside. Well the fan upgrade dropped my Temp. and I also purchased a fan controler and I leave the fans on after the lights go out to cool the hood down. It is simple to do.

Probably would also help to change out the stock return pump for something that 'pulls harder' so the surface water is pulled into top inlet of chamber 1.

After making some changes to the flow inside my 29 I noticed lots of dust on top even though i had the return pump aimed straight up to agitate surface and I usually have the lids closed. I was confused because I have a tunze nano in there and a koralia (lots of flow for my barebottom).

Turns out the flow given the direction of my powerheads and return had created a kind of swirling vortex if you will. There was so much swirling motion that the surface water didn't want to take the detour to exit into chamber 1. Make sense?

So I redirected my ph's and return to force slightly more flow in an 'up and to the right' direction so it pushes the dust out and into chamber 1. Now it's clear skies. I still want to upgrade the stock return pump though. Any suggestions?

Anyone have suggestions for replacement pumps for more turnover?
 
Mag drive makes an awesome pump, I like the Dr. Foster Smith item# CD-133322 it runs 700 GPH, if that's not enough for you they have em' all the way up to 1800 GPH :-)

Maxijet also makes a good pump the 3000 runs at 775 GPH, I have used both pumps and they both worked out great!!

Chemipure users - are you guys using the 5oz or 10oz in your 29g? It says the 5oz is for 20g and 10oz for 40.

Seems like with the displacement of sand, rock, and then how much the back chambers are actually holding, 20g might be spot-on. ??
 
hi forddna, A week or so I help a friend start his new 29Bio and with sand and about 7lb of LR it took us 20gl of water to get it running.

Why are my fans so noisy? or Why don't my fans work?
Like the ballast, some biocubes shipped with faulty fans. Oceanic will happily replace them for you, but this can take several weeks.

The 8 and 14 gallon Biocubes use 50mm fans that are 10mm thick, while the 29 gallon is 60mm by 10 mm. If you are willing to shop around you can usually find some good deals on computer fans that will work with a little wiring. There are also upgrade kits 8 and 14 29

Alright. So...I'm trying to decide what may be good to add to my tank.

29 biocube. We currently have two clownfish, anemone, diamond goby, emerald crab, two cleaner shrimp, GSP, one Acan, two frags of candy cane coral, some rics, and some zoas (and I'm having the hardest time getting my zoas attached to something...I bought frags that ended up being unmounted and they just won't super glue on to anything). Also have a coco worm and snails.

I'm still having some algae problems now and again. Also, have a few flat worms that I first noticed a few weeks ago. Getting mixed reviews on what to do with those. Some people say just siphon and they'll probably end up dying off anyway..some say to do the chemical treatment. I'm just not sure.

And, on my coco worm, I got my first ever aipstasia (sp??). I'm a little frustrated with that whole thing. Also mixed reviews. Get a peppermint shrimp or use the chemical treatment.

Thoughts?

And, livestock wise would anyone suggest anything else. I"m just stuck with what to do. I have a birthday coming up so I'd like to suggest gift ideas if you get what I'm saying :)

I love my goby, but he's irritating me with all his sand moving *sigh*. I have to check the tank at least once a day to make sure I uncover anything he's covered up.

and my nimble nano went in the mail on Thursday. Very excited for it to get here.
 
for your zoas, you can try putting them into a small cup filled with live rock rubble, then cover the top of the cup with some mesh material and use a rubber band to hole the mesh in place. you could probably get away with using a fishnet stocking or something? just leave the cup in the tank for a couple of weeks and the zoas should stick themsoeves to a rock.

when i had aiptasia i injected them with lime juice using a syringe that i got from the target pharmacy for $.25 cents. it worked great for me. there were some aiptasias that i couldnt reach in the tank so i bought a few peppermint shrimp and they took care of the rest. that solved my problem but, unfortunatly after i ran out of aiptasias my pep shrimp died.

in the video im not injecting the zoanthids that are there, you actually cant see the aiptasias...

i also added a refugium when i started to see algae in my tank. i just did the same thing as alot of other people here and scraped the black paint off the back glass and added a light with some cheato and live rock...

i had flatworms at one point but i was able to easily siphon them out before they became a problem. i would try to siphon them out first. you may have to do it daily for a few weeks, but if that doesnt work then its on to something else... like a wrasse! :D
im not big on chemical treatments. :)

update on the 29BC.. all aptasia's are now non-existant after the addition of 3 peppermint shrimps a week ago. I had at least 20 small aptasia's and one monster one, almost 2 inches tall and had a head of the size of a quarter... Im a definite believer in peppies now :)
