New owner here...

did the flow mod between chamber 1 & 2

probably replacing the stock pump with an MJ-900. Also been offered the stock pump from a BC29 for free, so i'm going to see if that fits first.

next stop is to add the LR, convert chamber 2 into a Chaeto 'fuge and get my LR in there.
Maybe I'm reading your post incorrectly, but if you're talking about adding live rock to chamber #2, I would recommend against it. Keep all your live rock in the display tank, putting it in chamber #2 doesn't give you any extra benefit (versus just having it all in the DT) and it can become a bit of a maintenance hassles if a bunch of deitritus builds up in that chamber.

I modified chamber #1 by pulling out the false bottom and dremmeling out the "grate" portioin but leaving the main "frame" and replacing it so I could add a heater AND still use the filter that slides in the grooves in chamber #1...when I did this, there was SO much deitritus buildup at the bottom of the chamber, I was a bit shocked...can you say high nitrates? ;)

hotrod thats an awesome hitchhiker! Did you buy the rock from the store or from another reefer? What about the BC? I live in an upstairs apartment and My 125gallon has no problem up here! Been here for a year filled and being used with zero issues. The floor would be able to withstand the pressure because it is dispursed throughtout the whole stand. Just make sure you put the tank on a support beam area, I put mine right next to the stairway knowing that it would be a strong area because of the floor joists running accross for the structure of the flooring. I would advice against setting it up in the center of the room, but you should have no problems setting it up against a wall :)

Ok, so I need a little advice/direction on what to do w/ my ATO for my BC29. I bought the kit from aquahub.com, and I have two questions:

1) What chamber should I put the return back in the tank? My configuration is typical, heater in chamber one, media rack and tunze 9002 in champer 2, and Rio 6hf return in chamber 3. Obviously the float valves will go in chamber 3. Should the return go in here as well, or in chamber 1 with the heater.

2) My hose going from the reservoir to the tank is 1/2" inner diameter, 5/8" outer diameter to fit on a maxi jet 1200. I'm using black aquarium hose. How do I get the hose to spray downward into the tank, and how do I attach the hose snugly to the back of the tank? I tried to find a PVC or Pex elbow, and they had a perfect one, but only in brass (fail).

Thanks in advance for any guidance.

i put the top off pipe in the chamber 3 on mine. i did that because the first chamber holds too much water and the end of the pipe would end up being under water. if the end of the pipe is under water then tank water will siphon back into the top off rresivior when the top off pump shuts off.

Has anybody replaced the fans in the BioCube 29 hood? Was wondering if a different configuratin or actual different fan would make any difference in the cooling of the system.

My first BC and LR plus sand all came from a guy who was getting out of it, he had really let the tank go, everything was covered in algae and all the fish had pretty much died off, other than one super strong clown... But rather than cycling the tank and starting from scratch I did move about half the water with the tank, it has made a pretty good recovery over the past year, I have done a lot of upgrading and added more LR, so I have no clue where the hitchhikers came from.

My second BC I also bought from a local reefer, but I am starting it all over from scratch, it is in the middle of its cycle right now, its going to be kept pretty much stock, other than a skimmer and lighting upgrade.

And my third BC is in the mail, it is brand new, don't know what I am going to do with it yet, the price was just too good to pass up, I just hope it makes it in one piece!!

I would go with the bigger tank, but the home I am renting right now is a mobile home, I kind of looked under it and I just really don't like the floor joists, and the floor boards only look to be 1/2 untreated ply. So I will stick with my BC's for now...

Anyone ever do any modification to the inner lining of the display in a bc? i'm talking about the rubbery stuff they line the tank with. on mine it peels off in places and along the back wall a portion has come loose so it sways with the current. i was thinking of maybe stripping it all out and / or going over this with black silicone...??? not really sure how this works. alternatively i was thinking of supergluing the loose portion back against the wall. thoughts?

Mine also had the black rubber lining come loose, I used a razor to trim away the loose pieces and called it a day... Well I had to call oceanic a couple days ago to complain about fans and ballast on my other tank, and while on the phone with the warranty guy I asked him about the rubber lining he said if too much comes off the back wall will separate, and with that he also informed me he was shipping me a brand new tank!!

So just some food for thought if the tank is still newer...

jb61264, I replaced the fans with the lighting upgade from Nanotuners. Yes, it droped the temp by 2 degrees. I like the seperate controler. What's the number for BC warranty.

The guy I spoke with was Nick Sranske, he is in the warranty department, not sure if others work in there or not. The number to get him is 1-888-255-4527 ext: 2268

Thanks for the info...I wonder if they sell the fans separate...not necessarily interested in upgrading the lighting (since I'm upgrading to a 75 over the next 4-6 months) but I would like to have fans that actually keep the heat out...I got a new pair from BC warranty service and they are the same old sucky ones that come originally with the unit.

Does anyone know where I can buy replacement lights for my BC29 online? I have checked a couple of places but they are on backorder.

I would just go to best buy and get a couple PC cooling fans, they require little modding and you can even get the ones with built in speed controllers and a built in blue LED, not sure what type of effect that would have since I have never tried it.......... hmmmm, project time!!

can you help me get in touch with them about the separating lining?

So, I recently saw that Oceanic has put out a UV sterilizer to be used with the 14 or 29g. Anyone used one yet?

jb61264, I went to a local Comp. store and took the old fans in and they had the same kind I bought them for a friend the ran about $17. You just need to cut the connector from the old fans. I just tried something last night. I get a big computer fan and opened the top. Put on top just to see if it would cool the water. It cooled it two degrees in 30m. Wow that was fast then I just shut it off. I will send you a pic. when I have time. I will create a better mount when I have time.
