Bio Cube Owner's Thread

The tang is ok for now. When he gets to big he comes out. He is about 2.5" long right now, has no signs of distress, never been sick, and gets a wide variety diet daily.

I understand that most people hate to see a tang in a biocube, and if you're going to make a blanket rule then, no you shouldn't put one in. IMO it can be done with the right size/type of tang and in the right system. People just have to be responsible enough to move the tang when it outgrows the tank.

I do appreciate the feedback, we just have differing opinions , no harm there.

Man, the I thought about getting a 1/2" blue hippo. But in a few months, he should technically be large enough for a 50 gallon. Unless they are really, really slow growers.

I have never seen tangs so small. This one shop had about a dozen 1/2" blue hippo. The cutest things ever. But I knew better.

I have a friend that put in a blue hippo tang that was roughly the size of a quarter. It was very cool to see, however he had to feed it 2-3 times a day. He took it out about 4-5months later when it got to about 3.5" long, it was super super aggressive to all other inhabitants. I don't think a blue hippo is a good idea, but that fish is alive and healthy now and it always was. If you know what you're doing and have the tank for it, I think you can pull off a yellow or scopas. I've had the Scopas for roughly 3 months, I like it a lot, but I know his time to go is around the corner.

I know better not to do it. I was tempted, like everyone is here, but I KNEW that it wouldn't be a good idea.

Except I have some sort of special ability to say "no thanks" and walk away, even if I am determined to find something specific. If it isn't up to my standards, coral wise I can walk away from $5 Acan polyps if there were offered to me in bad condition.

I also evaluate the LFS I am getting stuff from. Mainly its how clean or dirty the tanks are, what their stocking the display tanks with, and the overall "feel" of the LFS. Second, I ask the employees, if it's not the owner, a few questions in varying difficulty to see what they would say. Knowledgeable employee's can determine the overall feel of the LFS.

$5 acan's? ide be on those like stink on horse manure...even if in bad shape I would buy them to hopefully get them to bounce back. I dont think that was the best analogistic comparison...

However,
I agree, the tang in a 29g cube(no matter what the species, age, or size) is a horrible idea, unless it is in there for temporary qt treatment.
Never buy something with intent of getting rid of it. Thats a waste of money, you must be big ballin' if you can afford to waste $$ on a tang in economic times like these. I understand it has brought you enjoyment, but do you think you have given the fish the same enjoyment it has brought you?

Aside from the tang issue, very nice cube otherwise.

LOL, big ballin. It was $25, I've spent more on water in since I've had him. Thanks for the tank compliment though, agree to disagree. I've found that the "tang in a biocube" issue is similar to politics. People feel very strongly on both sides, and are dug into the sand, there's nothing wrong with it, it doesn't mean one side is smarter than the other, it just means they disagree and again there's no harm in that.

I found $10/polyp Acans locally. Not the best looking colors either. But I'm after the more vibrant colored ones, not ones with a single color.

tcwoodrn/ baller
I think if you want to put a whale in your tank it's your tank. Also if you are in this hobby to be watching your every penny then you are in it for the wrong reason. tcwoodrn/baller nice tank and yes I too have spent countless amount of money with my 18 years + experience. Have fun spend your money have fun.

I'm new to salt water in general, and bought a BioCube 29 a week ago. Nothing exciting going on yet, but it's still new ;)

Biocube lighting helpHi All,

Biocube lighting helpHi All,

Hi All,

I need some help trouble shooting my Biocube 14 lighting. I thought the daylight bulb burned out so I replaced it. The new one did not work either. When I used both the new and old bulb in the actinic slot they both worked. The fans still work and the wiring seems to be intacked. Any advice or help would be appreciated. Thanks.

Chris

The ballast most likely, same thing happened to mine. Luckily it happened right before the 1year warrenty ended.

Chris- Defintetly a ballast! Call oceanic's phone number. They are REALLY good about shipping you a new one out really fast! I had this happen to me on my 29, and they just asked when it was made I think. But gave me no hassles!

+1 for Oceanic's Customer Service

I added a nano cube 12 sump and a octopus extreme 160 to my bio cube 29.

Widen the stock overflow in the tank more. There is about 600gph flow through there. Rio HF6 + eheim 1250 + stock return.

Durso standpipe installed in the overflow. Still a little loud for my taste

Need to clean up the hose a little bit, but it's all working now

Here is a macro of the skimmer body. Still breaking in.
