Bioballs necessary for DD Skimmer?

Are the bioballs completely necessary for a down draft skimmer? Is there anything else that I could use to replace them, or should I just get a becket injector for it and take the bioballs out?

Get the beckett injecter and ditch the bioballs.

I love the beckets, and was wondering what everyone else thought. I will be getting an ETSS skimmer that is a dual downdraft style skimmer. Would I be able to replace the injectors with just becketts, or should I just stick with the downdraft style b/c it's too much work?
