I could use 48 of them if they are the same size as the ones in my skimmer.

Standard size I guess, pin type...

I'll have to take one out of the skimmer to compare and bring one over or next get together, maybe Thurs.

Howard, if they are the ones I gave you they came with an ecosystem sump. Don't know if that helps at all in figuring out the size.

kathy i'm wondering how that will help your clowns?

Bioballs in a trickle filter are very efficient at colonizing an aerobic bacteria that converts ammonia to nitrite, and then to nitrate. I've been using a trickle filter with about 5 gallons of bioballs, but my system has not been filled up with fish. Now that my clownfish are laying a nest every 11 days, it seems I may need more ammonia removal capacity. Better to have more, than not enough.

Cheers,
Kathy

Kathy, what do you do about the build up of natrates? I also have a box full of them that I can bring to the frag swap if you need more (or if anyone else wants some).

I do daily water changes. For a fish only system, a little nitrate is not a big problem. You also don't need such brilliant lights. Algae does grow in the tanks, but it is easy to scrape it off of the bare bottom tanks. Nitrates can be a problem for the fish only when they get to about 200. Mine are at 20.

Water changes accomplish 3 things: reduces nitrates, replenishes iodine, which my larvae need to metamorphosize, and since I skim the exported water from my sump, it takes the place of a protein skimmer.

My system tank water is pretty clean, considering there are hundreds of tiny fish in there. My display tank, however.....gets neglected, I am afraid. :(

Your display doesn't look that bad. Maybe a little algae here and there, but it has some nice corals that divert the eyes from the bad stuff.

Now my tank is another story.

Mykayel, I'll take any extra b balls you have. I am starting a mud filter and need them for the ends of my sump.
