BioSponge Filter - Black flakes

Is there any danger in black flakes coming off of a biosponge filter?

The last couple of had in my QT seem to lose some black flakes, size of sand/1mm or so. It all seems to sink and rest on the bottom, not staying suspended.

Is there any risk to the fish? Or should I clean it out immediately and get rid of the sponge filter?

I wouldn't be concerned at all..
Often fish eat stuff they shouldn't and spit it right back out.. Or it passes through.
