Birth of a 20 tall (Lots of pics!!)

OK a couple more questions. It looks like you drilled different sized holes for the drain to the sump and the return as well as the closed loops. What size holes are they for what sized bulkhead and what size drill bit did you use? Are you having problems with the return putting water back into the display faster than the drain can handle? Also on your closed loop what are you using to keep the input from becoming clogged?
Thanks

sorry it took a sec to get back to you, Basically I used 2 diff. sized holes for my tank one was for a 1" bulkhead and the other was for a 1/2" bulkhead. The 1" was used for the return to assure that there was just as much water leaving the tank as there was coming in. I dont have any problems with the flow it runs great. Just to insure that this was foolproof I initially added a ball valve to the return that went to the refugium and this was going to be my plan on controlling the flow. However, since I took the refugium out I have not adjusted the flow of the pump and even at max flow I have been able to succesfully move enough water in, and out of the tank with no problems. I cant remember off the top of my head what size the bits were that I used, but Ill look on the auction I won to find that info for you.

As far as the closed loop becoming clogged. I have a screw on strainer that screws into the bulkhead which is one of the two I have that are threaded that filters the junk but all in all, on a closed loop your not really filtering anyway so what goes in just comes out, just try to keep the hermits and the fish and all from coming out. lol

More in a bit.

At this point with all the modifications what do you think you spent total on the tank setup. I know you used old parts as well so include the price from those as well if you could. Curious how making a tank stands up against buying all the ready made pieces.

I just got a yellow watchman goby today. I put him in at night so I really didnt get to see how he liked his new home. Ill take some pics of him tomorrow as well as an FTS. The new fuge is going to be started as well. Since the first one cracked on the bottom I am going to use 1/4" glass and that will surely hold up to the design.

Well guys it has been a while. I lost two fish in this tank so far and I am baffled. I figured the only explaination is that since both fish werent free swimmers the could have been killed by hermit crabs, however, I have never had this problem before. One thing I did notice is that the tank has a considerable amount of vibratory noise on the inside, that I could hear if I put my ear up to the tank, I was thinking well maybe the vibration made the fish nuts and he gave up? lol I have no idea. This is my first nano and maybe there are some things that I am overlooking. Can anyone help me.

As far as updates go I rebuilt the fuge and it is now installed and running. I am hoping to have some caulerpa in there by the end of the week, along with some sand and some rock rubble.

I really want to get some fish in here but I am kinda scared to lose them so any input will help.

Thanks all,

Ok, I was lucky and got a pic of the watchman while he was eating.

We named him Frito

Cool i just got 1 of those.

I named mine Snoman.

Yeah well he WAS cool. Im pretty bummed I have lost very few fish in my whole hobby and BAM two just like that. I'm not sure what could be wrong.

Falling rocks can kill fish that dig. They would be smashed under the rock and you may not know that he rock work has even shifted. Also, many fish get sucked into skimmers only to be found several months later swimming around in the overflow or skimmer. Check for the bodies.

Good luck. Nice tank.

thanks for the reply, Well I saw the carcass of my poor lil fish stuck to one of the prongs pf some tonga rock on the outside, so I know that he wasnt smased. all my rock is fairly large and any movement would be noticable. I also put the rock in before the substrate. He wouldnt have been able to get into the skimmer either.

Do you think its possible for him to have been attacked by hermits?

hermits wouldn't really hunt down fish. he was probably dead before the hermits got to him. what are your water parameters? it's possible that the fish was in a bad health to begin with.

which architecture school are you attending in Arizona?
