Biting

Mine just started biting as well. The female will get a hold of a piece of skin and shake her body. It reminds me of what a dog does to a toy.

So my pair of black false percs do fine with their tankmates but they don't seem as tolerant of ME. They know I feed them but if my hand goes in the water, i get tagged. Has anyone had this problem? I know I've read about this kind of thing before.

Anyway, the point is, that I'm trying to find a way to discourage this behavior before they get big enough to do more than startle and amuse me. I am thinking about making a hand analog to sit/float/suspend in the tank so hopefully they become accustomed to there being a hand or hand shaped THING in their territory. Has anyone else tried this or had success in NOT GETTING BITTEN ANYMORE?

Could be a classic example of pavlovs dog. They have grown accustomed to you feeding them and think you have food everytime you put your hand in the tank.

I actually "trained" my clowns to know when feeding time is. I tap the top of the tank with a plastic cup before i drop the food in. At first they were startled, then they got used to it and started going nuts looking up for the food and swimming around the top.

I conditioned them like this because I had some more aggressive eaters that would eat all the food before the clowns got an adequate amount. The other fish don't seem to be smart enough to grasp this concept yet though.

edit -- FWIW I had a pair of occelaris that bit me too. Then I noticed one day that the above worked and attributed it to that.

I am not saying that maroons, tomatoes and all other aggressive clowns are attacking for said reasons. They are aggressive fish and attack anything really.

you'll get used to the bites in time.........but it's funny that a 3 inch fish can make a grown man scream like a girl the first time it happens

ONE Inch... ONE. :(

FAIL!

I had a bicolor blenny that would bite..

but he would bite my forearm.. not my fingers.. the soft skin on the underside of my forearm and it hurt terribly.

He stopped when I bought an angler and the angler ate him

oops

At one point in time, I had a yellow watchman gobie. I thought that it got eaten by one of my tube anemones, so I got a snowflake eel. A day after I put the eel in, I noticed a yellow thing behind a rock...it was the gobie, still alive. Never saw him again.

that sucks. I don't know what I'd do if my little Scoop got eaten

Thanks for the Ace Ventura memory
"It was RIGHT there!"

No problem. Here are a few more:eek1:

Ace: That's a lovely wrap you're wearing! Perhaps I could buy you some fluffy new slippers, made from the heads of innocent and defenseless baby seals!

The Monopoly Guy: Who is this ghastly man?

Ace: Ace Ventura, Pet Detective. And YOU must be the Monopoly guy! Hey, thanks for the free parking.

Helicopter Pilot: Ace! I would turn back if I were you! It's not worth it!

Ace: If you were me, then I'd be you, and I'd use your body to get to the top. You can't stop me no matter who you are!

I'm gonna need to watch that again.
