Hey everyone, my tank has been up for about a month and i am finaly ready for my first fish. I am really interested in true and false perculas, ESPIECALLY the black and white ones. If anybody has any expierance with them or pics of their own i would be very interested to see:D Also, what are some good online dealers that i could get a couple.

Last question, my mom really wants a regular orange clown, and is wiling to pay for a pair if i get one orange. Is it possible for a black and white, and a regular orange one to pair up???

Thanks a lot
Dan

well, you wouldnt really want them to pair i would think. its like maiting a pure bread dog with a mut kinda? lol, i have some black and whites.. see pics in my gallery.
how big is your tank? 29?
i was going to say if its big enough to get both.. but not in a 29..
liveaquaria has some i think under collector fish.
i would get some at a LFS so you can see how they look before you buy.

Here is the pair my wife picked up last year. It was her only demand for the tank to have black clowns. As you can see they have paired off and the one has gotten considerably bigger than the other. These pics are from 6 mths ago and they have grown even more. These are now in a 90g tank now but started in a 65....

Ok I'd have to disagree 100% with this statement! Neither of these would be muts... they are both 100% occelaris clowns.. .there is no "mut" in either!

Granted the bloodlines of the black and whites are very small... and your gonna have alot of inbreeding in your black and whites... so in your analogy... the black and whites would be less superior to the regulars with a very diverse gene pool. These are not like some animals where you keep breeding brothers and sisters to get the best genes...these show "defects" if you will after a certian amount of in-breeding.

If you saw the black and whites from about 3 years ago, they had very stubby box looking faces and tiny fins... believed to be from to much in breeding. They got some more broodstock and corrected that problem though.

So back on topic... you can pair a black and white with a regular, they will very easily accept each other & you wont be breeding brother and sister in the long run.

Very nice pair or BOC you have there. Those pics are 6 months old have they colored up full black yet?
I've had a pair for 2 years and still they have not colored all the way.

I'm interested in the Black and White occelaris as well, I'd like a mated pair, or if at all possible two juvi's with the hope of mating them together. Is it sort of a crap shoot weather or not they'll mate together if I were to buy a couple of juvi's? Or should I specifically look for a mated pair for sale?

Oh geeze, never mind people, I just read the page on pairing clowns, kinda answered my own question there, lol.

ricordiaking,
They have gotten larger and have lost more of the orange face coloring but thats about it.

papagimp,
When I first got these 2 they stayed at opposite sides of the tank most of the time. Then all of a sudden they were always together. Over some time 1 took the male and one female position and as you can see grew larger than the other. I have seen some nesting of sorts but have not had any mating with them yet. They sure guard their little cove in the rocks at the one side of the tank though :)

I guess these ORA clowns are getting all back fast enough, we need some WC one.

Do the Black and White occelaris ever turn totally black? I've seen some totally black ones and seen some statements of that as the age they darken just want to make sure..

I have 2 already but they just swim around in pairs far away from the 2 RBTA in the tank.. O well...

I got the WC ones, I just need to get them to breed!

How did you manage that?

If you didn't get those from a collector in Aus, those are CB's.

I have had these for over a year and got them from a breeder who had them for 4-5 years. He got them from a wholesaler in D.C. who gets shipments directly from Australia.

I have a mated pair that was hangins out in the LFS together and they hang all the time in my tank

A little expensive @ $50ea. but they are well worth it!

the pic is when he had brook but he is fine now no worries

I have two B&Ws. I orginally bought a pair, but one mysteriously died (it was probably sick from the start). Then I got another from ORA and that one died in quarantine. Finally I got a third (also an ORA B&W) which is doing well with the original survivor. Lesson is: choose wisely. I have not had luck with ordering online.

Bought a pair of Black&White's a couple of weeks ago and now just got a pair of Picasso clowns. I though there maybe a problem between the pairs but I was wrong can't move them apart.
