Black back ground

I haveseen on a number of times where the picture will have a very nice black background when I am pretty sure there was something else there. I know there are a few techniques and was wondering which ones are the best.

Using a black paint brush. Though I'm not sure if all of them programs have it.

I thought so but whenever I do it it looks like crap. I even get down to the 1 pixel and it takes forever.
