Black cap basslet

Let's talk black cap basslet. Just another royal gramma with a different paint job? Worth the (relatively) high price? How are they temperament-wise?

I think they are pretty similar to royal grammas temperament-wise. I personally wouldn't buy one because they are so expensive, and I think the reason for that is because that are collected in deeper waters.

A lot of people have that one fish that just gives them problems for whatever reason. Mine is the black cap basslet. I know it sounds strange because they are classified an an easier fish. I've bought two of them over the years and both died fairly soon. One was fine in QT and then went belly up (Literally instantly) after acclimating him into the main tank. Second one, same thing except when he went into the main tank he instantly hid in the rocks and was never seen again. After that I said screw it and haven't bought another one.

I love mine , he's about 3 inches and is a model citizen , never bother anyone , eats anything and hangs out with my other 3 Royal grammas

I've had one about 8 months in a 115 gal 5 ft tank with a yellow tang, fairy wrasse, solorensis, watchman goby, purple firefish, 2 cleaner shrimp, and two green chromis. They get along fine for the most part, with some occasional disputes. I was told he'd hide a lot, but he's often cruising around and always ready when my feeder is about to dispense. Beautiful great fish.

Glad to see this thread.

I just got a Black Cap Basslet. Approx 3". Sitting in QT.

Really shy at this point which is expected. Sit's 24/7 inside a artificial Aqaurium Ornament house. (Sponge Bob's Pineapple)

Not a problem since only 2 days. Still not coming out even to eat.

Even put a Motion Detect WEBCAM on the QT to see if he comes out ever. Nope!

Being patient, since he is Beautiful.

I had one for about 6 years. Lived in a 40 with a clown fish. Those two went to hell and back with bad tank husbandry and scorching hot water temps (85-90, I lived in a valley with no AC). Survived fine. One of the best fish I ever had. Easy to keep, never aggressive. Back then... 2004-5??? They were $50, now 70-80... Not too much of an increase.

They are a cool fish and I've contemplated one for the past couple of years but finally just got one with a new clean up crew from Reeftopia for $35.

Still not eating actively, but still early (Day 3 in QT).

Doesn't looked stressed at all, so good sign.
