Black Friday Sale Thread

Hey All,

Figured we could have a thread going for Black Friday Sales for the LFS's and online vendors. Obviously don't want this to turn into a biased thread about LFS, as I know many have personal opinions. But if you hear of a sale somewhere, share it so others can benefit!

I will start it off with Country Critters having a 20% off storewide this upcoming weekend. There are exclusions of course, but I believe all livestock is included.

I am in the market for live rock so hoping there are some deals at other LFS that carry good rock so I can snag a good deal!

in my opinion....you would probably get a better deal on live rock if you purchase from a hobbyist getting out.

Definitely agree...I have been on the lookout for a few weeks now. Would rather get established rock as well.

Thanks Frank, maybe I’ll reach out. Wondering if it’s a bad idea to add rock with that many mushrooms and spas though?

Hi Kevin, in my opinion I would go with nice man made rock and let it cycle, Getting used live rock usually invites a host of pests and imo contains phosphates that have been absorbed over the years

What do you suggest Andy? I did sea Carib sea reef rock and life rock. But I read that those also leak a ton of phosphates. I have thought about that, but worry about phosphate leaking

Messed that up, I saw Carib sea life rock and also real reef rock. The real reef rock is cured in freshwater bins followed by 12 weeks in saltwater. They recommend it be cycled. The life rock is your standard man made colored up dry rock which they claim is infused with Hendricks bacteria.

When I first set up my 215gal tank I used Marco Rock and then seeded it with some rock from my previous 85gal tank.

Definitely agree with going with dead rock vs live to eliminate pests and diseases being introduced into your tank. Give the rocks an acid OR bleach bath and they be good as new.

I do understand those points. I’m looking into it. I just worry about transferring over my life stock to a tank freshly cycled with dry rock. My understanding and practice was always to add livestock slowly to a newly cycled tank

Are you not able to transfer any of the rocks from your original tank to the new one? If you can this will help and prevent a cycle and new tank syndrome.

I was going to not transfer it as it has a few pests on it that I’ve just dealt with for the past few years. Technically I could take the time to inspect every rock and try and stop that, but wasn’t planning on it. However, if I end up not finding established rock and go with dry rock, I am thinking that may be the best choice? The Issue with this is that I would need to do the transfer of all my livestock in one day though and have zero cycle.
