Black or sailfin molly

Looking at trying a molly and wondering if the black molly or sailfin would be the better choice. All input appreciated.

hmmm well if you only have a 75gallon thats going to be way to small for a sailfin needs at least a 150 and even that can be small so i would stay away from them and i dont know to much about the black molly.

Thought you were talking about the tang.lol These mollies can be converted to full seawater and do quite well. Wondering which would be the better choice. Thanks again

i took a look at them both i like the sailfin actually a pretty cool fish! but I learned something new today haha thanks! have a good one.

I have had mollies of several varieties in full strength saltwater. I noticed that balloons had the hardest time swimming. Platies also do pretty well up to about 1.018 sg.

Thanks. Like the look of the sailfin molly, which do well, but not quite as well as the black it seems. Would like to try the sailfin. Does anyone have one in their tank?

I've had both, they did fine for several months in my tank they would usually hang out in low flow areas. Angelfish ended up taking out the black ones though.

Megatrev62 I was thinking of trying one as well. Do you know if Aquarium 101 has them?

I'm going there Monday evening to check it out. I know they have some nice livebearers. I'll let you know. Pets Unlimited have some really nice sailfins, but I'm not paying $19.99 for one. I have been reading through the archives and I'm going to give either black or sailfins a shot. Not sure which yet. I don't have an algae problem, just thought something cheap that may be interesting and beneficial. Cheers

$20 for a sailfin molly?? Is that the average price of all mollies up there or are they charging more because its already acclimated to SW?
I bought mine on sale for like 89 cents at petsmart.

Both went in great. Both dead as of today. 3 days apart. They hung in top corners hating the flow, but did eat.Oh well, lesson learned.

Four of mine are still going strong. Swimming all over the tank. You should have purchased the ones they had that were already in brackish water.

Silver sailfin mollies does adapt quickly to saltwater. I usually put 1 to 2 inches females to breed (1 sailfin male only) and provide some babies to my marine betta. Albino salifin also adapts well. Black mollies does not adapt well in my experience. My mollies does live up to 2 years.

it can be tough. i drop some in the marine tanks at the store. most dont make it. every once in a while you get one that does, and when they do, boy are they tough. i have spent all day slowly acclimating them too, to no avail. i have read you should really do it over a month or so
