Black spots on Yellow Tang

Just dose with copper every 2 days after the water change?

No, check the copper level and be sure it doesn't need more dosing. It should be fine between WC's, but after 3 WC's, you'll want to check the sopper level and add if necessary.

Well- I spent all last night putting together the new steralizer. Man that was a pain.

I ended up splicing it in with my canister filters exhaust. I used a "T" intersection and a flow control valve to adjust the flow to the steralizer. I found a marineland "L" (sprayer bar) and I have that dumping the steralized water back into the tank. Ill take picture soon and post them up. I feel much better about that running.

I dug up some gravel and put the 2 nitrex boxes at the bottom of the tank and covered them. That really clouded up my water- it was clear by morning.

I swapped out the heaters for the visi-therm one. Woke up with my water EXACTLY where I set it on the heater. That was nice for a change.

And finally- I installed 2 maxi-jet 600's in the tank (140gph) They are blowing counter clockwise. The fish seem to like it. I was watching them playing in the current this morning. Im sure the tang will like it when he gets back in there.

The tang looks to be happier this morning. He was swimming around with his fins at full mast- Its hard to tell if hes eating anything because its dark under there. Ill take a picture later tonight.

Thats it for now.

just went and got a regular old light for the tang- how long per day should I leave it on? He started to eat a little once I turned it on.

wow- what a difference a day makes.

I was tempted to throw my yellow tang back in the tank if he still looked starved tonight.

Like I said in a previous post- i got a light for him. I also refreshed his soggy spinach and nori-

This morning- he still looked a little starved... but when I got home from work- he was full looking. COuldnt even tell he hasn't ate much in the past few days while in the QT.

He ate about a 1/4 inch all the way around his spinach- he didnt touch the nori- and he ate all of the tiny little pellets i dropped in there before I went to work.

I did a water change this morning before I left for work (25%) and I dropped 2 or 3 drops of copper medicine in the tank.

He went from 40 black spots down to 3 black spots. So hes doing much better. Ill keep you guys informed on his progress. I am going to try to keep him in there for about 2 weeks. My main tank is not fallow. My other fish arent showing signs of disease- and I have my steralizer running on "kill parasite mode" on the main tank. In another 10 days- it should be clean enough to try putting him back in there... what do you think?

my tang has shed all but two of his spots. I am going to wait another week to see if he gets any more- if he doesnt- then i am going to put him back in the tank. He is swimming fast laps in that 10 gallon now- so he needs more room to swim. The main tank should be steralized by then. (turbo twister steralizer)

Copper is not a good treatment for black ich and 6 to 8 weeks in copper is far too long. A series of formalin dips is the best treatment for black ich. Some have success with FW dips. If your fish is thin then feed it more times each day. Have you tried giving it frozen Formula-Two and frozen spirulina?

Terry B

Feeding isnt an issue with the tang any more- He has been eating well for the past couple of days-

I did a 90 second fresh water dip today. I would have left him in the full 90 seconds- but the fish wasnt moving at all...

I matched temperature and PH-

The remaining black spots are GONE....

How much longer should I leave him in there?

If all the black spots are gone then you are probably safe to put the fish back into the display. This is assuming that the fish does not have ich.

Terry B

You should either freeze of blanch spinach before using it to break down membranes that the fish cannot digest. Better to use nori, Formula-Two, spirulina etc.

Terry B

he eats formula two and spirulina. He simply wont touch nori for nothing- even soaked in garlic. Now that he is fatter- I am going to try just making him eat that instead-

He also prefers it fresh- sometimes he will eat frozen- he wont touch blanched.

There are three types of dried seaweed available: green, red and brown. Your yellow might eat the red. These are packaged for the aquarium industry and available at some LFS.

Terry B

i have some red- i put it in there before he started eating- maybe I will try that again...

Safe to go ahead and put him back in the main tank eh?

Black Ich is the paravortex worm. I would not use things like copper or other chemicals to get rid of it - they are far more stressful on the fish than needed. I've personally eradicated it a couple times (different fish) using freshwater dips and cleaner shrimp.

When I first saw it, my yellow had about 15 spots. They all came off after freshwater dip, and some returned when I put him back into the same system. The key is to move from one system, freshwater dip, then into another tank for a few weeks.

You can read lots about it on wetwebmedia - I've included some links below. Bob Fenner's method has worked great for me a couple times now, and I didn't have to subject the fish to chemicals.

This page has several Q&A's from people asking about Black Ich. Especially check out the ones under "Yellow tang with parasites", "Black spots", External Parasite", and "Black Spot Disease/Paravortex".

This one has some general info on yellows that makes passing mention of black ich.

Good luck.
