black substrate

Has anyone used black substare?_ I have painted the back of the tank black and the bottom as I wasn't going to use a substrate._ However my family likes the snails and all that come out of the substrate at feeding time so they are wanting me to put a substrate in it._ I am thinking of black as I like the darker back and bottom as it doesn't take away from the brightness of the corals and fish like the white does (at least I don't think so)... your thoughts and pics?

Sorry all my pictures are gone. But I had black reef sand that I got from Barry. In my opinion if you are using substrate, black is the only way to go. I also had the black tank back.

Go black you will love it, the corals pop. Especially when you put a neon green or a red brain down on the sand.

idk, seems like black would hide the nasty stuff that shows against the glass, and that it would be pretty with the black background and all, I like the idea

but it will also show all the nasty brown detritus sitting on top of the sand. :D

Black sand tends to show waste more, since waste is usually a lighter color. Perhaps with enough flow this won't be an issue though?

I never had any problems with the brown on the sand as long as I did water changes at about 3 month intervals. I know that is too long but it worked for my tank. 25% water change every 3 months more than that and things went out of sync. Less of course I would notice time to change the water.

but even at the 3 month change there really wasn;t much brown around the sand. I had alot of live rock though.

I just prefer the looks of the light colored sugar sized sand. I think it just looks good. That being said, I'm leaning toward BB but not because of looks.
