I have some black velvet looking stuff growing in my tank, any ideas as to what it could be? And how to get rid of it?

no I know what cyano looks like believe me. it looks like patches of black velvet.
Black Is not a good color to see forming anywhere In a tank IMO as It could be some form of Sulphur type mass forming that I would be concerned about. If you can syphon It out I would do so unless you can make a positive ID soon. I may be wrong but Better safe than sorry.

Taken from some website a quick search turned-up

Black brush, or BBA, algae can be one of a number of specific genera of "œred" algae in the Rhodophyta family. Most of the algae in this family are actually marine, but a few freshwater species exist that particularly target our planted aquariums.
