just picked these up from my LFS. has anybody ever seen black zoas before ? they were one a rock with some rainbow zoas and I had him frag them off for me.... I brought them home and dipped them and put them in .... they have only been in my system for 24 hours so the are not completely open yet....let me know what you think

Hmm interesting. Never seen them. Seen some dull brown ones but not black. They could look cool once they open and under blues. Update some pictures once they get settled!

My take on this from a geological standpoint is that these could be from Hawaii or somewhere with volcanic activity where the ash is all over the sea floor. The base could be black due to that. That's just what I think. Very cool though!

just an update on the new black Paly's AKA S&K Nosferatu Paly's......I fragged them into two frags and this 16+ polyp frag is headed to ebay....they don't like a lot of light so they are very low in the tank...... the pic was taken after lights out with a flashlight on them....but they are out during the day as well....

They are actually a Palythoa sp.
The nomenclature for Protopalythoa sp. has changed.

Watch for palytoxin when handling those guys!
Again ALL zoanthids can have palytoxin!!
They probably have lots of external slime too.
Make sure you don't put your hand in the eyes/mouth after handling them!
Wear gloves, goggles and keep your mouth shut to be safe!

They are probably fast growers. Would be great to isolate them on their own rock.
They are exotic!

got the same black polyps,,but mine are real shiny when thier closed..came with a Vietnam dragon eye colony..any ideas??? good or bad

I went back and bought one for 5 bucks. Its a single polyp but cant go wrong for that price. I was playing around with them regarding placement and flow, and they def do not like med-high flow and prefer low light. They've finally opened when I placed them in a shadowy spot and low flow. I'm going to place them in a no light tank when they multiply and see how they do. Perhaps they will grow faster, move, who knows....
My husband calls them "Darth Vader" as we have Darth Mauls..............

Target feed them small particle dry coral food. They do better when fed.
You can give them Coral Frenzy or Reef Chili once a week.
Some people like to feed them mysis shrimps.
Make sure you isolate them on their own rock!!!
