I'd like to hear from anyone who has had both species in a tank together and what the outcome was. Were the fish compatible or did the gramma harass the firefish?

Thanks for your time!

Firefish, in general, are very timid fish and easily harassed to the point where they hide and starve to death.

I had them together in a 210g reef with no problems. I also had 300 lbs of LR for the fishes to hide in.

I don't have direct experience with those two exact fish, but I personally wouldn't try it in that size tank. I would expect the gramma to consider the firefish extremely unnecessary. ;) Please treat with a grain of salt - this is speculation. If you do try it, you'd want to give serious attention to the arrangement of the rockwork.

I've kept a pair of N. magnifica with a blackcap in a 40g tank for over a year without issue. (lost blackcap in a tank move)

My buddy keeps a pair of N. Magnifica with a royal gramma in a 40g as well without issue.

The firefish were well established before the basslet addition in both situations.

Well i already have the firefish pair and they're very outgoing - but I think thats because their tankmates are placid. I've been very careful in avoiding bossy fish because of this, so I'll leave it for a larger upgrade later. Guess I'm also a low risk taker.

Reason I ask is there was a local who tried a number of royals with a pair of blackcaps in a huge 500 gallon tank, and it was a bloodbath. He said the battle was over before he could remove anyone and they used the whole tank to move. Their use of the whole tank really surprised me and I know in my case the firefish would never fight back.:sad1:

Thanks everyone for your input.
