I'm transitioning into a 40 gallon breeder tank with a 40 gallon sump and was looking for some ideas on where to drill and what sort of plumbing setup to employ. My previous rig was a 37 gallon with bulkheads in the upper right and upper left corners, the intake with a strainer and an external durso and the return a simple PVC elbow.
While that worked OK, I had some trouble getting a good, stable water level and there was a fair amount of noise involved. Before I had the durso, it sounded like a toilet flushing; the durso was an improvement but I think it's pretty clear things could be done better.
If you had a "blank canvas" of a tank to start with, where would you drill and how would you plumb? I'd rather avoid building an overflow box if possible (are these really necessary as a water level control?) as I like a minimal amount of "stuff" in the tank.
Bottom drilling would be ideal as the bottoms are not tempered and I have a limited amount of rear-wall space to work with but I'm not sure I understand the dynamics with that. Could it be as simple as installing a PVC pipe with a strainer to the desired water level? But wouldn't this create the whirlpool and toilet flushing sound I had with the non-durso setup at the start?
Any and all ideas appreciated. Where would you go WRT to plumbing if you could start such a project?
Thanks in advance.
