Blasto Wellsi Appearance Question.

I have a fairly new colony. I can see the "skeleton" poking through some of the polyps. It almost looks like the ribs are showing through the polyp. I feed them mysis and cyclopeez a couple of times a week. Is this appearance normal?

not really. they should be plump/puffy and not showing skeleton.

from what i gather they don't need much light and don't like a lot of flow.

mine are under 250 watts MH and very gentle flow. doing well for the past 7 months if it matters.

-edit-
what are your tank parameters? How do other LPS look?

Spidey07. I have another colony bought from the same place at the same time that looks awesome. My other LPS frogspawn looks great and is growing new heads. I have other softies, a couple of sps frags, and my fish and clams are all fine. Parameters below.

SG 1.025
Temp 79-81
Alk 9.5 DKH
Calcium 420
PH 8.1
No ammonia, Nitrites, Nitrates.
Besides the "ribs" showing on this one colony the color (red) looks a little washed out. Do you think that these sypmtoms would more likely be not enough light or too much light? They are about 14 inches and a little off to the side of a 14K Phoenix and 2 x 65 W Actinics.

I don't know. sounds like your parameters and other corals are fine.

maybe just not used to the light? try on the bottom?

Possible it came from much lower lighting?

I'm no expert of course, but I normally put my blastos on the bottom for a couple weeks and then move them up. I too have a pheonix 14k 250 watt bulb.

Thanks for the help. I will keep an eye on it. When I feed it it plumps up and looks nice. Then after a few hours the edges are still plump but around the center I can see the skeleton kind of sticking up underneath the polyp.

How new is new?

I had a similar colony under similar conditions and it took a couple weeks to improve. My water conditions were the same except for temp which runs 76-77 and my lighting is 440w VHO with the colony located on the bottom of a 55 gallon.

When you feed, do you target feed with the pumps off? Do you see the polyps close on the food?

And finally do you have beat crabs and shrimp off with a stick to make sure they get to keep the food?? :)

Bill,

Yes I turn my pumps off and do have to watch while they eat with a stick in my hand. Seriously I have to keep my greedy cleaner shrimp from robbing everything of food. The Blasto's have been in the tank for about 2.5 weeks. The pure red colony looks great. The red with green lace looks a little less healthy. The polyps are fully extended over the skeleton but I can see the skeleton bumps around the center of the polyps. I will give them some more time.

Hey jasper,

I was serious about the stick because I have to chase the hermits, emeralds and a peppermint shrimp myself!

I have my colony about 4-5 months and have new polyps showing up and there are still some days when it is less plump. I have noticed continued improvement as time goes on.

Hang in there, if everything else is thriving it should catch up.

Its probably the lighting, I just moved mine from PC to Mh and they dont seem as happy, I think they like the lower light conditions better.
