bleached bta

Ok well have doing much reading on this board I have realized that I have a bleached bta. I had no idea. When I first purchased my anemone back Dec 2006 it was white with green tint. Now it is pretty much white with white spots. Hardly has tentacles to speak of, it's almost like a big flat surface with some tenicales on the ends. I have been feeding him regularly and he acceptes it and eats good. I feed him kryil. Since I brought him home he has been attached to one rock which seems somewhat shielded from light. What are your suggestions. Is it possible to ever bring it back to life the way it should look? Should I move the rock closer to the lights up like four inched from base of tank? Should I try Silverside? Help!!

I would target feed mouth size grated shrimp soaked in silcon. Check your ligths and make sure they have not gone bad and you have enough wattage light avail. ie. 4-5 watt per gallon. Also no ammonia, nitrite, nitrate, phosphate, stable PH, SG =1.026. If you want to save it you need to give it alot of TLC, feeding it 2-3 /day w/ No force feeding, or it will die.

Good luck

Yes you are right Dec of 06 and it is still bleached. I didn't realize that it was not suppose to be like that. Gee!! My water levels are fine. S G is 1.025. Should I bring it up to 1.026? The tank is 18 inches deep and the anemone is at the bottom in a rock. Lighting is 135 watt power compact flouresant. Tank size 29 gallon.

Lighting is a little weak for it if he is more than halfway down the tank. I would try to get it up higher in the tank under the lighting and feed 2 -3 times a week. Also try feeding some silversides.

Good Luck

all good advice so far, but i'd like to add to the diagnosis.

if he is bleached after 8 months, chances are you dont need to be afraid that he'll die over the weekend, but he certainly wont be getting any better without change.

for food, if you can do garlic or selcon supplemented foods thats good, but not necessary--if you dont have the additives, dont wait to start feeding. if you have a korean grocery store (just trust me on this part) go there and look for a bag of frozen seafood mix--no preservatives, just frozen. should be about 6-9 dollars. take it home, while still frozen, blend it all into small small pieces--not pureed, but not chunks either. you will probably need to add small amounts of water while you are blending, this would be a good time to add garlic, selcon, etc if you have it. put the mix in ziploc bags so that when they lay flat, they are about 1/4-1/2 inch thick. freeze lying flat. break the frozen mix into 'bite sized' chuncks (thats why you dont make them 1" thick--learned that the hard way!) and feed every other day. fish, inverts, nems love this mix, but the detractor is if you follow that amount, you'll get dirty water pretty fast. i have dirty water, i overskim and do pretty decent water changes to keep mine in good shape--i also run a po4 reactor and a well lit macro algae portion in my sump. i'll also be adding phyto soon to further clean up my messy feedings.

the good news is my messy feedings contributed to my bta going from bleached to 5x original size to split to now 4x size with a clone that is 3x size in just 10 months.

i also have 175w mh which helps a ton.
