Bleaching

I own a 500 gallon display tank that has been up for a year, it is dominated by sps corals monti's acros, all my corals are growing very very well and fast. all my parameters are in check i do weekly 65 gallon water changes, my question is why is it every once in awhile one of my frags/ colonies will bleach itself out? i mean there could be a colony or frag right next to it or the same species of coral in another part of the tank will be fine. this is after having these in my tank for well over a col months. would love to hear peoples input on this.

Not a good photo using my phone but as you can tell the coral in the back is bleaching out while all the other corals ( about 100 or so and colonies) are all fine and nice and colorful

Check your parameters ca, kh, mg, ph, temp, salinity. Tell us about your lighting.

all my parameters are dead on and have been for over a year i test every other day i have top notch lighting 8 kessil 360we tuna blues and two pacific sun 3 x 145 watt metis lamps. i have been in this hobby for 20 years and always had that problem of just one coral or colony that would bleach. trust me i have tons of other sps corals that are fine its just that one from time to time that will bleach out no specific type of coral could be any. i am just wondering why only one will and not either its sister coral of any others.

You're plenty experienced .. so don't take this as a low blow in any way, but double check that alk test.. Every time that has happened to me it has been linked, in some way, to an Alk event of some sort.

My only other thought is a pest, but thats pretty severe.. The tissue is gone,... right? not just bleached?

I dose my alk and test it almost on a daily basis and it runs between 8.5 and 10. Yes the tissue is gone.

Between 8.5 and 10 can be too much of a bounce if it happens in less than 2-3 days. I'd say your alk is not stable at all.

i am going to go with a calcium reactor and get rid of two part dosing it seams i am chasing my all all the time and i think your right the swings are what is causing it

Are you having to add large amounts of two part every other day when you test? If you can set up an automatic dosed I think you will find you can find stability without a CaRx. With that being said, I use a CaRx and love it! But I did have success for a while with two part

I have an automatic doser and have been using it for over a year now

Get your water fully analyse like Triton lab.
Seems like something is out and it is more than your alkalinity swing.
Do you mind posting all your water parameters if you think it is spot on.

Alk 9.5 cal 450 mag 1360 nitrate 0-1 phosphate 0.03 saltinty 1.025

What is your temperature? Have you seen any signs of percipatation on heater or pumps maybe your UV? I have had it bad until I dropped my temperature to under 80 and lowered my ALK to 9

I see a problem with your alkalinity at 9.5.
With your ULNS I won't move more than alkalinity 8.2 and cal 420 max.
Otherwise you will experience random RTN.
That's what I have seen with others and experienced personally.

You will be surprised by just doing that.

I agree with this..
It looks like a dragon that rtned in the photos. I find them particularly prone to random rtn.
A calcium reactor would go a long way towards stabilizing alk. I think that's a great idea as well..
You could also experiment with raising n a touch.

Having said all that, I don't see a problem with rare, random rtn.. It happens from time to time..
