Its my understanding that blood shrimp (Lysmata debelius) tend to be reclusive when single or in a small group, but more active when in a larger group. Does anyone know what group size is required to achieve 'critical mass' for active behaviour?
Um.... I am not sure what is your definition of "active behavior" because these shrimps aren't like fishes that will swim about in the tank. Personally I think it's not the size of the shrimp colony but the valume of the fishes in the tank. Since these shrimps are cleaner shrimps in nature they will prefer a large fish population to provide lots of fish surface area to pick and feed. So if you really want to achieve fire red shrimp in an active stage you probably want a large tank with a larger school of reef safe fishes for them to pick on.
Perhaps 'active' is not the right word. Apparently in bigger groups they are not as cryptic and spend more time in the open. Thats what I'm really interested in.
i have 2 and i noticed since i added the second, they both come out in the open, specially during feeding, and roam a little but still stay near their place of refuge. i read on a site that groups of 5-7 are very entertaining and attractive
