Blue Efflatounaria :)

So I thought I had Cespitularia...
After some good research on it, thanks to wetwebmedia, I have almost 100% Identified what I have as Blue Efflatounaria.

I will post a picture as soon as it percs up the way I wish.
Its a maricultured colony, quite blue in coloration... deap sea blue.

It is not pulsing as of yet... but does look lively.

Cespitularia has a tendency to form branches off a main branch... this does not, it is on a single stock, with multiple pulsers per stock, very simular to Heteroxenias, or Xenias, but according to wetwebmedia, this is Blue Efflatounaria ...
Still, kinda hard to get, and very beautiful!

Razz, I cant tell you exactly were I got it, but I will say that I did NOT BUY IT THROUGH ANY LFS, OR ANY WHOLESALER, OR ANY HOBBIEST...

I recieved it directly from Dinarbali.

Xeniid Family Pictures

Go to the very bottom, you will see a picture of Efflatounaria on a clam... this is simular to what I have, except mine is much darker blue...

Im second guessing this now....
And looking into
Blue Something???

This look simular, but not exactly... Same Coloration almost..

It does not branch like this one: Look at the blue coral about mid page...

Hey, Teena, no its not THAT blue.. I wish, but that photo looks like it was taken under 20K MH or some serious actinic supplimentation...


Its shapping up NICELY now.. I may be able to get a picture on here by Sunday, if all goes as planned!

PICTURES AT LAST~!

Pardon the blurry images... I tryed to save the best ones... its difficult to hold a coral in the water, and take a picture with the other hand at the same time I have discovered!


OK< THE MOMENT OF TRUTH!..

So far, no pulsing action, or anything that resembles it, it DOES NOT close up when I touch it or move it, only slightly shrinks, but does NOT close the polyps, I think we can safely assume that its not Xenia, by that alone, while with my Elong and Umbels they reallllly dislike me if I touch them!...

This is a maricultured colony straight out of dinarbali... Dont ask where that is, thats just what it says on our invoice and stocklists.
I will try to find out more, where this Dinarbali place is.


It does produce stalks, with multiple polyps per stalk.
They do not pulse, they do not close, they are blue/purple in color... compair the Xenia Elongata on the left in one of those pictures to its color.

It looks like a species of Efflatounaria to me, according to wetwebmedia.
Possibly branching anthelia?
not cespitularia, because it does not have multiple branches per stalk.
...
Not Xenia because it does not close when touched, and doesnt pulse as xenia generally do.


... whatever it is, its pretty cool...

maybe blue anthelia? I have no idea? it seems to be small in polyp size than the average Xenia, hope you find an idea, that blue/purple color is amazing

Thanks for the compliment, it would look better if I could get rid of this algae... found out its not dino's, but a cynobacteria species that starts with a P... I forget.. but it grows in nutrient limited aquariums that are brightly lite... AKA MY TANK!

try adding some current, so the cyno can settle as fast, then add some purigen or chemi-pure to the sump, that usually works in a few weeks for cyano

if that doesnt work use chemi-clean, i used it on one of my tanks a few years ago, cyano disappeared in a day and never came back! Works great if you follow the directions properly.

Thanks for the direction, but read above... this is not your average red Cynobacteria... this is a different species that thrives in nutrient POOR water that is brightly illuminated...

My tank is very clean, and VERY brightly lit... its thriving...
To get rid of it, I need to feed more and remove manually...

You can look it up in the ALGAE PROBLEM SOLVERS book... its the coffecolored dark THICK MATTING oxygen collecting cynobacteria.

Shawn your tank is so amazingly beautiful and that blue color is awesome and plenty blue enough to suit me. I know it must be devastating though that it has not begun to pulse and I will therefore sacrifice my tank space and relieve you of it!

I actually see those come in on aquacultured sps a lot. They have a bluish tint to them and grow pretty rapidly. Ive never seen mine pulse though, are you sure about that efflatounaria id? Im looking in "Soft Corals and Sea Fans" by fabricius and Alderslade (fabulous book) and it doesnt look too much like the description.

Um.. No, not exactly, I have looked at Wetwebmedia and in the above post I have listed a link to wetwebmedia that shows a blue effla on maxima clams...

Mine has a Green Tubipora hitchhiker, as well as a moon paly hitchhiker, and some black sun coral on the bottom..

4 corals for the price of 1 !!! cant beat that with a 10 foot poll!


I have never seen any Xeniids as hitchhikers before... ever... so its interesting you are getting them.
