Blue Faced Angel in a mixed reef??

Hi All,

I have loved the blue faced angels for years but never had a big enough tank to have one call home. I now have a tank that is right around 300gal (74x36x26"). The tank I imagine is fine but I am getting the lps bug as well. I would like to have mixed reef when it is finally stocked. Right now I have aminly sps frags and 1 war coral and a rainbow favia.

As i said I love angels especially the blue face. I would'nt mind having a interuptis or a red sea regal some day as well but I don't really feal like loosing all my lps in the process.

I know it is a gamble but I see many people who have angels and report some damage being done but not real bad. I don't intend to have clams so no worries there.

Just would like to see how people have faired w/ the blueface, regals and interuptis in a mixed reef? Please feel free to add pics if you would like. always nice to see :D .

Also what region would you recommend getting a blue face from? Is there differences in colors from different regions?? ( I'd assume so). Is any certain region known to have better quality blue faces?

thanks for any thoughts.

I have not had a blue face, but have stocked various "non-reef-safe" fish in my tank. Every one is different (especially angle fish), and some "mostly reef safe" have been worse than some "not reef safe".

What it comes down to is you either buy the fish you want, try a few cheap frags, and build your reef around what the fish don't eat - or you buy $200 Australian corals you absolutely must have and only buy fish you are sure won't eat it.

I have had a blue face in my mostly lps and softie tank for over 9 months now and have watched him go through the color change to adult hood. The only type coral he has ever bothered was a scolymia and a colt coral. Mine stays primarily at one end of the tank where he has a cave he hangs close to most of the time. I moved those corals to the other side of the tank and he has never looked at them again. He leaves everything else alone. I am by no means recommending to add one. I was prepared when I added mine to remove him if necessary. It is a great looking fish though.

I have kept a Blueface in my LPS dominated tank and he picked so much on my Aussie Elegance that he killed it. He also picked on all my zoas, scoly and two different sps pieces. He had to go. Now I have a red sea regal angel and he only picks on my zoas, but don't mind since I only have two zoa colonies and he leaves everything else alone.

Thanks for the replies. I still am interested, I guess it is just a crap shoot. Now I just need to search for a small juvenile.

Is there any differences between one from the indo pacific or sri lanka? Color differences? Anyone know if one reion is healthier than the other?

How do they ship? Are they fairly healthy once established? any advice to help w/ purchase would be greatly appreciated. I would like to purchase from someplace like Live aquaria or someother place that has a no nonsense live arrival policy.

I'm not sure. I have a flagfin right now and have had a majestic in the past and both have been fine in my mainly sps tank to this point.

I was hoping maybe if I got one young enough it would not have such a natural tendency to be "wild" and rely more on feedings for its' food. I know they will naturally graze but hopefully keeping them full w/ daily feedings they would not rely on grazing for food source.

AND .....if all else fails I can see it go through the color change to adult colors :)
