Blue Gig deflating after 1 year

My blue Gig was acquired in January last year , It never deflated so I did not treat. Last Monday evening I noticed it shrunk to about 1/3 its normal size. the next couple of days if went back to normal size but mouth looked open and puffed up (not nearly as bad as some of the pics in the treatment thread).

This morning as I left for work it was back to being small again. Put it in hospital tank along with what I believe to be a rock anemone (got it before xmas) and will start treatment tonight.

WOW... What else was added?
Frags/Coral/Fish/invertibrates? Anything?

How are levels compared to a few months ago?
What are the levels?

What lights are you running?

What is your feeding regiment like?
Any changes in type, quantity, or even source?

Loose any fish lately, either just dead or missing?

If I remember right it stays away from that power head. Are there any torn or fragmented tentacles?

New to tank

Rock nem about a month ago

My montis are having some issues and i initially thought mag was low so i raised it but then they (montis) seemed worse so i have gradually lowered it.

Levels have been consistant since october of 2013 with doser
Temp 79
Cal 480
Alk 8.9
Mag 1400
Nitrates 0.5
Phos .08 (this has always tested the same so it may not be too accurate with red sea test kit)

No tears that i can see

Fish are all accounted for ( i also thought maybe it ate someone but that doesn't appear to be the case

When i got the rock nem it was very bleached and belched up some wate after a few days but it has been coloring up nicely and no shrinking

Is the pic dated 'Monday 1/21/14' represent it deflated. If so I would not be to concerned tbh. Mine do this quite often, usually the day after being fed.

Low PH also causes mine to shrink. I think yours is looking pretty healthy.

The deflating you don't want is when they kind of you flat and pancake shaped.

Yes that is the deflated pic . You can see by the surrounding coralline where it used to extend. I never have spot fed it and since no other fish are missing I am baffled on what could be the problem ....after a couple of days it seemed to be extending again but then on the 3rd day it was smaller than on the 1/21/14 picture.

No UV. Both nems in treatment tank as of yesterday. I wasn't home this morning but from what i saw about 1 this morning and all this day after 12 noon. Gig has not deflated or any signs of the "rat poop " excrement. Actually nothing on tank floor other than a few specks of sand from yesterdays transfer
2nd round of cipro tonight

Do you run carbon? In this case, I think I'd go with allelopathy as the possible culprit. Since you've had the other anemone for a month, I tend to think it wasn't an infection.

In either case, I would not treat both in the same tank as this would probably do more harm than good at this point, especially since they're in such close quarters. Since the gig still has long tentacles (even though its physical size is smaller than normal) I wouldn't be too concerned, and think it may be better off going back to the DT.

Finally, what kinds of additives are you using, if any? I had an incident with aminos (AquaVitro Fuel) where I think I added too much at one time, and my gig partially deflated. It was the only time I've seen it deflate since I received it. I was fine after a few days, and didn't deflate after that.

D-nak

I totally forgot that i had just recently trued dising red sea amino acids a few days earlier then the first time it deflated. Maybe that was it. So you think putting it back in DT and no more amino dosing yes

I think so, and I think it'll be fine. If you want to try aminos again, go real slow. Your gig definitely doesn't look sick, just irritated. I would also add that it looks fine in the more recent photos.

Interesting. I have been dosing reef energy A and B... In medium doses. I wonder how well mine is tolerating it. I have seen changes in my Ritteri, I will have to see how it does with it when I dose next.

Thank you all for your input

D-nak I appreciate the advice and had you not specifically mentioned the amino dosing thing I probably would not have remembered doing so .

Worm5406 reef energy A & B is what I just recently tried . I suppose the next time I will cut dose in half. For what its worth I only dosed 8ml of each and if I remember correctly it recommended 2ml per 25gal and I have a 12o gal DT plus another 20 gal in sump

Yeah I agree cut back to maybe 1/4 (25%) and work up. You are dosing for effect also, not just because of the directions. The anemone retracting is a true effect.

@ stickleback. I had raised the powerhead in Nov after seeing that photo. Lol

Transferred the nems back into DT last night and both seem normal this morning. I will take some pics tonight. Thanks again everyone for your help. Love this amemone community
