Blue Gudgeon Dartfish ?

Anyone have a Blue Gudgeon? Are they similar to a firefish in the way they hangout in a tank?

Would they work out well with this stockist in a 75g?

Flame Angelfish
2x Clownfish percs
Exquisite Fairy Wrasse
McCosker's Flasher Wrasse
Carpenter's Flasher Wrasse
Midas Blenny
Helfrichi Firefish

Then 2x Blue Gudgeons

Should I go with the two Blue Gudgeons or a Blue Reef Chromis?

They're a bit shier than firefish. Some hide in the rockwork all day and only come out at feeding. Some will feel more comfortable and swim around the water if there are other dartfish about. They're neat fish with good colors but don't expect to see them all the time.

Aren't Blue Reef Chromis' a bit darker? Not sure if you're looking for a specific color of fish.

not a big fan of picky eaters, thanks. Looks like I'll go with one blue reef chromis and maybe one other small fish.

I haven't had any problems getting my group of 4 to eat frozen mysis. However, the big stays hidden all the time, and I just had one go carpet surfing. I have mesh screen tops, but when the heater was in the DT tank (I just got done moving the tank and plumbing wasn't all set back up yet), he managed to get out of a 1" gap caused by the heater cord. I also lost one during the move when the holding bins salinity got out of whack.

The other 2 are out a lot of the time (the carpet surfer was usually with them as well). They definitely need a larger group to feel secure and come out.

If you're looking for a cool blue fish that isn't too big, there are a couple of Assessors which may fit the bill.

The Randall's (Can sometimes get captive bred from ORA) are not totally blue but reflect blue light very well, thus appearing blue.

There's also the Macneil's Assesor.

Blue gudgeons are some of the wimpiest fish out there IME. I tried one years ago and he was constantly wedged under a rock and eventually just kinda withered away, same thing happened with one we placed in a display tank at the LFS where I worked, which housed a couple zebra dartfish and a pair of blue/green chromis, so it wasn't like there were any "ruffians" in there to keep him hiding. All in all, I wouldn't probably try one again, despite their unique coloration. For blue you could look into any of the more benign damsel species, or a *single* chromis (blue reef, blue/green, black axil), neon gobies, blue or Randall's assessors etc.

benign damsel you don't say... don't google those two words together lol. As of right now I'm pretty much sold on getting a solo blue reef chromis. Seeing the assessors swim upside down will freak me out, those blue/macneil's assessors are sweet but a little more pricey.

I have a blue lamarck Angel who is a model citizen.

Wish I could get a fish as big as the lamarck angel. What about the Starcki Damsels. Just noticed them on liveaquaria and they look perrty cool and seem to be the more docile compared to the other damsels.

Starki damsels are one of the most peaceful species of damsels and a brilliant blue.

Blue gudgeons are more outgoing when in large groups of 5 or more, but when kept singly often hide.

I have a scissor tail dartfish. beautiful blue and it stays out a bit more than my two zebra barred darts.

Sounds like you've already decided otherwise. I picked up a trio of blue gudgeons from diver's den a few weeks ago.

I had no problem getting them to eat. They took to frozen mysis and NLS pellets right away. Today I tried black worms and they took to them immediately as well.

They do hide though and are jumpers. I lost one a few nights ago when I left the lid on my Biocube open for a little while to help cool the tank after a slightly too warm water change. It went carpet surfing. I had figured that the lights were off and I've never seen them out at night, so much for that though.

They all 3 (now 2) spend most of their time under a rock where they hollowed out a burrow of sorts in the sand. They often times hang out with their heads poking out, which is kind of cute. The come out for feedings and hang around for a while afterwards, but definitely aren't tank cruisers. They have learned the approximate feeding times and often come out a short while before hand.

Thanks,
Joe

Is it just me or are there so many different hues of these guys? I've seen some awesome ones and bland ones.

I'd like to add a couple at some point but won't order them online.

I have a single Blue Gudgeon in my tank and he does great. He hides most of the day in his cave, poking his head out to look around. Then at feeding time he's all over the place eating like a pig. Then he stays out for a bit and swims around, then goes back to his cave. Nothing picks on him and he doesn't pick on anything........just don't see a lot of him.

Yes, there are some brilliant blue ones and some bland ones, there are some with black and yellow tails and some with just black tails.

The blue Chromis can get a bit aggressive. A blue headed wrasse is pretty, I just picked up a neon goby too. Super cool little fish and he was only $6!
