Blue Jaw with fin rot or worse?

Anemia

New member
I added a pair of blue jaws to my DT 8 days ago. Both fish were in Q for 2 months. In the last couple days, the fins on the female have been deteriorating and she now has a couple spots at the base of her tail. The male looks fine. These are the only additions to my tank in the last 8 or 9 months.

They are eating selcon soaked krill and mysis as well as formulas 1 and 2. She has a very healthy appetite and doesn't show any sign of wasting.

Tank params are good. 78°, 8.3ph, ammonia-nitrite-nitrate 0, alk is a touch low around 6.8, water is always RO/DI.

I have taken the Q tank down since I wasn't planning on adding anything else in the foreseeable future.

I'm now trying to figure out if I should scramble the Q tank back into operation and put her back in for some kind of treatment or ride this out and see what happens.

If I throw her back in Q, what should I treat with? I've successfully treated several fish for ich in the past, but this isn't ich.

Thanks for the help.

I wouldn't hit the panic button just yet. Soaking her food in vitamins might enable the immune system to fight this off naturally. But if it continues to get worse, you'll probably have to QT and treat with antibiotics.

^^^^^^^I agree^^^^^

I don't think the little scratches circled are anything to worry about. Did the fish have the fin problems in the QT? They fins look like they've been a problem for a while. Possible bullies?
On the feeding: I'd really limit the krill. There are several recent studies linking frequent krill feeding to a few problems, including lockjaw and some other maladies that i'm too lazy to look up. Raw shrimp (cut to size) is a great staple food for any trigger.

Thanks for the replies. The spots near her tail look a bit better this afternoon than yesterday. Her fins didn't not look like that in QT. I have an extremely territorial black ocellaris that tolerates nothing in a 12" radius of her BTAs. I haven't seen the clown nip at the trigger, but I wouldn't put it past her since she bites me every time I put my hand in the tank.

I'm going to get the QT back up and running just in case but plan on riding this out with good nutrition and hope for the best. These triggers are supposed to be pretty hardy, so I'm possibly overreacting.

Oh and thanks for the info on the krill. I'll do some research. I haven't had a trigger in 8 or 9 years. Krill was my clown trigger's favorite.
