Blue Leg Hermes ate my Clam

I just bought a T. Maxima Clam about an inch in length. I placed it in the tank last night and this morning all my blue leg hermes were around and inside the shell. What happened? I thought they were all reef safe?

Sorry to break this to you, but if your hermit crabs ate your clam, it was because your clam was already dying. They were just doing their job.

yea, i figured that is what happened. I guess the heat from the car on the trip home is what got him.
