Blue Spot Jawfish

All the reading I've done about the BSJF suggests that this disease is actually pretty rare and somewhat overblown. I wonder if its related to collection habits and locations rather than a mysterious disease.

I'm not completely dismissing this, but just downplaying it a bit.

I would be more concerned about the fish jumping out of the tank.

That was me; I had just reaquascaped my tank. I'm guessing I destroyed the purple fire fishes bolt hole so he needed a new place to sleep. The BSJF didn't want a house guest so he ate him. They coexisted for about six months before this happened.

He jumped about two months later through egg-crate. This is why I sold my rimless tank and purchased one with trim so I can use a DYI screen top. I'll get another one after the cycle is done.

Let's revisit the acclimation process. What tips do you have for helping these guys feel comfortable in their new environment?

Ok...so I bought one of these awhile back not knowing its jumping potential...so it jumped out of the tank the first night and I peeled him off the carpet the next morning.

I really liked this fish and so I went to home depot...bought some egg crate...cut the egg crate to match the top of my aquarium and to act as a ventilated cover since the glass covers make my tank get too hot and I couldnt believe it...
I peeled the new one out of the carpet the next morning as well..he jumped through my egg crate cover.

What does everyone else use as a cover? Im now have some screen matterial I am going to try, but not sure how it will effect the temp of the tank. I dont have a hood over my tank and my lights are suspended from the ceiling.

I'm using a canopy (check my build thread if you want to see pictures ) but a lot of people use netting that you can buy at Lowes or Home Depot/etc.

Some also have glass/acrylic covers that work well.

Scroll down page 4 and I have a nice screen top DIY. I don't think a fish can get through these holes. Pm me and I can get you the info for the guy who sells the mesh, for dirt cheap and ships fast. It is really easy to do. It is like making a screen for a window.

I have the Bluespot on a Budget, the Yellowhead Jawfish. Does the same thing (Dig holes, pop head out, move rocks, open mouth when other fish come near) but no spots, Ha, ha

I have two jawfish in a 90 gallon tank. my wife bought me a yellow headed jaw and it disappeared for a month. We just figured it died and the crabs cleaned it up. So we bought a blue spotted jaw. the blue jaw never went into hiding it just went right to work making a home for itself. and about a week later before the lights come on I seen the yellow jaw swimming at the top of the tank. I'm kinda worried about the 2 of them living together, but it has been another month now and they seem to be coexisting so we will see what happens. I do have one complaint about the blue. While it was making a home one night it spit a crap load of sand right into the mouth of my hammer coral killing it dead. So be careful of corals that might get buried.

Actually I did get mine on sell and it is very healthy as far as I can tell. Very active eats very well is out all the time. I'm very happy with the purchase so far.

Even if you buy the fish at 60-150 these fish are finickyand sometimes hard to maintain. "closed lid" Sometimes the fish are small at that price seen some around my LRS. It all depends on how you feed/environment/ and did I not say again close lid**

I got one at $60 and he's doing great. Digging out almost all the sand under one of my rocks and burying some of my favorite zoas, lol.. But so far so good. Eats selcon enriched mysis and and pellets when they get close to his cave. There were about 5 or 6 people near me who bought them at that price and all are doing well, from what I've heard. Mine was a healthy size.

For our cover we took eggcrate and cut it to fit the top of the tank. Then we fastened a fiberglass screen over top of that as a second layer. Eventually we want to cut out the inside eggracte and just leave the rim with the screening. The stuff was very cheap, holds up pretty well and if it start to look bad we can just replace it.

We have had our BSJ for about a month now and I love that fish. We had one before which jumped through a small hole in our previous cover. We saw this one at the LFS and it was displaying all the behaviors I wanted to see (built a burrow, defended the burrow, and ate well) so I built the cover. We added him and that night he built a burrow and has been doing well ever since. He even survived our tank crash and living in a brute container for 4 days. When we added him back in, insant burrow.

BSJ are awesome fish. What size are the ones everybody has and how long have they had them?

I think mine is around 4" and rather bulky but he has been eating like a pig in a tank for 2 years also.

Mine is also around 3 1/2 or 4 inches.

I'm looking to get BSJF how did you QT them. did you put 3" of sand in the QT tank?
