Well, came home last night to find my jawfish mummified on the floor. Second one in three months. I have a piece of plexi that sits on brackets just below the top of the tank. There is a 1/2" gap between the edges of the plexi and the glass walls of the tank. I give up trying to keep this type of fish. No idea how he got out, needed arms to pull himself through the opening. His head was almost a half inch wide. One of my favorite fish to watch, beautiful colors with lots of personality. Only the clown and angler are more entertaining IMO. Outside of draping a net over the tank, which I don't want to do (rimless), I have no other options. I have seen the threads with the net framed and all, but I bought the rimless for a reason. I don't like seeing the net or the frame which is why I tried the plexi lid.

You just stated that there is a 1/2" gap.
After which you stated his head is almost 1/2" wide.

Less that 1/2" will fit through 1/2"

You need a more secure "lid"

Top should be secured at all times. I think it would sound better to split the lid in the middle so you have 1/4 gap front and back? but still its still an opening for the fish to get away. Aint not fish like a BSJF, but the come with a pretty price. if you leave an opening they will find a way to get out. good luck

michael cb 125 - Very observant. Thanks so much for your valuable math lesson, very insightful. I'm surprised you didn't also educate me on the fact that this fish actually doesn't have any arms. So theoretically speaking, he really couldn't have pulled himself through the opening.
The clearances/measurements stated were all approximations, as I did not use a micrometer to measure the fish's head or the gap. The gap between the "lid" and the tank was minimal but obviously not close enough to prevent him from leaping through the opening.

No reason to apologize Michael, I understand what you were trying to say. I hated losing that fish and thought the latest setup was sufficient. He was in there for a few weeks. I used the Solara tank and it's top glass lid design as a template. I guess it's net or no jumpers from here on out. But the gap that he got through is similar in size to some of the netting suggestions I have seen used/fashioned here on ReefCentral forum - 1/2" squares. I hate to mess up the look of the Elos mini with a net and block light if the webbing is too tight/close. Been following your system 70 and mini thread by the way - nice setup. Thinking about upgrading to a system 70 without their wastewater system included and going with special order black laminate cabinet and orange lacquer door. Same as steelersfan's colors. Waiting on pricing/shipping from Jesse.

I lost three of those fish at 100$ a pop!! Ya those fish are jumpers!!!! One jumped out and over my hood at least 12 from water!! Yow, and I too love these little guys!

I've had one for months now that came out of a friends tank where he had it for 1.5 years. Mine jumped right after I got him before he was settled in and managed to make it to the floor when I have a full canopy with only 1/2" slits in the back for cords. They truly are escape artists. I did scare him though and that was why he jumped. I threw him back in and now that he has a nice cave he has never attempted to jump since.

Ive said it before, and Ill say it again- rimless tanks are death sentences for fish. If attempting fish that are KNOWN jumpers (jawfish, wrasses, etc)- it is foolhardy to do so without CIOMPLETELY covering the top. IMO, Michael was justified in his comments. Just my opinion.

I agree. For jumpers, you need 1/4 inch holes or a complete cover. Egg crate or its equivalent simply does not work.

Thanks for your very valuable opinion jmaneyapanda - I'll be sure to file it away with all the other unsolicited opinions people feel the need to provide on ReefCentral - just my opinion. Facts are good though - they jump out of all tanks, not just the rimless ones. A more secure lid is required, we already figured that out.

OK. What is the purpose of this thread then? Because Im confused. You dont want anyones advice. Thats obvious. You just wanted to show everyone how you killed 2 fish in 3 months out of stubborness? Well, mission accomplished. Good luck in the future!!

The original poster clearly does not want advice. We should all keep our experience for a different thread.

jmaneyapanda - On the contrary, I would greatly appreciate any advice when it is not provided in a demeaning or a better than thou tone. As demonstrated by several other reefers on here, I certainly appreciated their input. You see, it really irks me and most other reefers on here when pompass idiots with attitudes, such as yourself, feel the need to provide their unwanted opinions rather than provide helpful information, advice or insight. Opinions are not advice genious, they cannot be backed up with any real scientific data or logic. "I've said it before, and I'll say it again" - nobody really cares at all what you think - keep your opinions to yourself, unless of course, someone asks for it. Thanks for the wishes of good luck in the future though.

snorvich, as I said in my reply above, I would certainly appreciate any advice or constructive critisism. I'm just not into receiving any attitude with it. I'm not exactly sure what you were agreeing to in your first post - jmaneyapanda's stupid comments or the fact that a more tightly knit screen of 1/4" or a gap of 1/4" or less between a plexi or glass lid and the tank's glass wall is necessary when housing known jumpers. I don't like losing any fish, nor do I like losing the money I spent for them, but losing the fish certainly hurts more. I thought that the lid and said gap was sufficient enough to allow me to house that species of fish - I was obviously wrong. I would love to see pictures of what you have on your two tanks to prevent your wrasses from leaping out - that would be very helpful.

"pompass idiot"- I dont even know what that means. But anyway, what is the purpose of this thread then? All the ADVICE you have been given, you have deemed "arrogant and pointless", despite the fact that it shows exactly what you have done wrong.

Whatever. Good luck. Good bye.

I have a lot of known jumpers. The best netting strategy is from Bradleyj (and others who have copied him), but in my case, I have a canopy with acrylic tops so there are NO gaps except a covered feeding hole. Any top with netting must have 1/4 inch holes.

My bluespot had arms and found it's way out a quarter size hole where my koralia cord exited the tank!

You can use eggcrate along the back cut to fit (if your tank is canopied and against a wall) covered in speaker grill material.
