Blue spotted Jawfish + barebottom tank?

Has anyone ever done it? I'm setting up a barebottom tank and my favorite fish is a blue spotted jawfish.

Was wondering what is the likeliness of it surviving without any sand?

Any tips and tricks? Setting up my first tank but I am not new to this hobby.

Any input would be appreciated.

Every Jawfish that I've seen without a sand bed has looked pretty pathetic... they never seem comfortable. I would advise you not to consider this species for your bare bottom tank.

I unfortunately would have to agree with this statement!! They just never look comfterable and he would scare himself with his own reflection from the bare bottom.

I agree. BSJ are semi difficult as it is (long term) so why reduce the odds of success?

They are designed to dig and spend a lot of their time doing so, so i would never even think about denying them this. If it is your fav fish why not do it properly and build the tank around it.

Keeping a jawfish without sand is like keeping any other fish without water. Its where they live. We're not talking about a goby or a wrasse that interacts with the sand and can modify its behavior to be without it.... this fish doesnt go into the rocks, it lives in a burrow in the sand.

I have three BSJ's and a pair of Pearlies. They will NOT do well in a BBT and I would not recommend putting the fish thru that LT torture. All of my Jaws burrow up a min of 3" of sand and other material for their dens (my big pearly male has about 4").
