Blue spotted puffer fish reef safe??

There is a small blue spotted puffer fish at the LFS and it says that it's reef safe.. In all my research NO puffer fish are reef safe. But in good argument, I could not find one that looked like the one for sale, it has many small bright blue spots on it. I can't find any pics. Does anyone know anything about these fish?? Thank you!

Re: Blue spotted puffer fish reef safe??

I have several puffers in various reefs that I currently have setup. Most puffers are not reef safe because they eat inverts. Toby puffers are typically better in reefs than other puffer types in my experience.

Not that this is a reason for a fish to be non reef safe, but puffers also tend to be somewhat clumsy and can bump around breaking coral. They can also be messy eaters which in some cases may lead to nitrate problems.

Thank you! I've always likes the puffers but don't think that I'll chance it in the reef tank. Never thought of the messy eating and nitrates, good point!

I had a blue spot for about 2 months in a reef with no issue other than he did eat a peppermint shrimp. He did not make it through a tank swap though. I do plan on picking up another one in the near future.
