Blue Spotted Puffer

I just picked one up yesterday . Ill admit it was sort of an impulse buy BUT I had been researching them earlier for my FOWLR I just didnt wanna pay shipping. I got this guy local and he seems great .Eats well and very personable already.HOWEVER I realized something that I hadnt gleaned from my earlier research.HE EATS INVERTEBRATES. Im afraid Ill have to move the CUC for that tank elsewhere. My turbos and hermits look horrified ( retracted in shells ) and my serpent star is wayyyy under the main rock-work instead of under his castle (yes I use fake decor in this tank....)
Anyway any thoughts would be appreciated and thanks for reading!

Basically all your snails and hermits will be toast in a few days with most puffers. This species is my favorite puffer though!

most of the hermits wil learn that when a shadow comes around they will hide. at least thats my experience. yes the snails are not fast enough to retract when getting attacked

I saw one of these in my LFS the other day. They look even better in person than in the pictures I've seen... Wish I could have a tank big enough for one! Good luck with it!

Blue spot puffs are my fav, awesome colors. Actually harder to find them anymore. I agree with above, the hermits will learn or become more nocturnal. Snail? u might have to add a few every couple months. Post some pics!

I've had my Blue Spot for about 2 months now and a few things I've noticed:

- Doesn't seem to bother much with Astrea snails or those that don't extend much past their shells. ( forget Nass snails ) Though he is only 3-4" and maybe that's due to his mouth being unable to crack larger shells.

- Likes to nibble on my long spined urchin... Keeps the spines fairly short, but lucky for him the spines seem to regenerate in enough time.

- Bites the hand that feeds

- Doesn't seem to bother with the few soft corals I have as frags in that tank

- Plays well with the Clown I have in the tank too.

+1 on the Hermits becoming nocturnal.

If anyone has any suggestions on how to manage your sand bed and algae with this guy I'd like to hear it. My tank is well maintained and balanced so the algae isn't out of control, but as of right now I've been adding about 3-5 snails a month as Kamikaze CUC.
