Blue Tang and ich

Hello all. I decided to get a blue tang, the so-called "ich magnet." The question I have is, what do I do about the ich. I have a ultraviolet sterilizer and the tank water quality is pretty good. I even have a cleaner wrasse in there, but the tang has plenty of ich growing. What do I do about the ich? I have an anemone in there as well so copper is a no-no. Any suggestions or do I just wait it out. I have only had it for a week.

The only sure fire way that I've used to get rid of ich is move the Tang to a Quarantine Tank. Do you have any other fish in the tank? If so you would have to move them also and leave the tank empty of fish for 5 or 6 weeks. All the ich will starve and you should never have a problem with ich again unless you introduce something new without Quarantining it first.

In the Quarantine tank you could then use Copper or Hypo Salinity to kill off the ich.

I wish I could move all of my fish from a 125 gallon into the only other tank I have which is a 10 gallon. Does ich-x work? That was something a friend of mine suggested.

Keep the tang well fed with nori and keep the tank stress free. My blue tang occassionaly shows signs of ich but it always passes. Usually stress brings on an outbreak.

You could try soaking the food in garlic juice. Some people say it stimulates the immune system. I haven't seen any proof but it won't hurt.

You could also buy a cleaner shrimp and a cleaner goby. My fish won't go near my shrimp buy my tangs let the goby clean them.

I had a question about your cleaner wrasse. All the books I've read said not to buy cleaner wrasses because they live exclusively off of the mucus of other fish and in most tanks there are not enough fish in there to sustain them. Does your cleaner eat any food you put in the tank?

I've used a cleaner goby to wipe out black ich for me so I wouldn't have to move everyone to QT. I didn't have the cleaner goby when my fish got the white ich and the cleaner shrimp I had didn't do much good.

You could always try the cleaner goby and feed them well.

I'm right there with you on that. I've read about them as well. However, Hung had one down at Sea of Marvels and he always does amazing things with fish from what I've seen. I grabbed him and sure enough he eats very small myisos shrimp and sometimes flakes. He also likes to munch on some brine shrimp that I have coming out from a brine shrimp hatchery. I'm interested to see how he does. :)
