Blue Tang got me!

Hey, i have a quick question. I was just moving a powerhead in my tank and apparently my blue tang was behind it. I felt some severe pain in my finger and there's a very fine laceration that bled like a standard papercut at first and now only bleeds when I squeeze it. My question is is there poison in their spikes because it hurts really bad still (and I'm no wimp). Should I take any precautions? I've already used peroxide but it still hurts and it's a little swollen...

That sucker is mean! (ok, it was totally my own fault....)

Thanks

That happened to me while hand feeding mine one night. I don't think Hippo's have venom but I'd make real sure you rinse the cut out very thoroughly and put an antibiotic ointment on it just in case.

No poison, but still a risk of infection so I would put some ointment on it. They are called Surgeon fish because they have that scalpel like dorsal fin.

Sorry to contradict, but they are actually referring to the the scalpel-shaped bone on either side of the tail fin. They use that as a defense mechanism when threatened.

Well I'm relieved... I've already got neosporin and a bandaid on it...

Count me super impressed... Such a deep fine cut, now I fear for the other fish in my tank!

I think your fish know better! My Maroon tried intimidate my powderblue tang and the PBT gave the maroon a swipe of his tail and thats all it took!

I got a pretty nice slice from my PBT's scalpel while transferring him from the QT to display system. It was such a sharp, clean cut that it sealed back up that day...
