Main additives you need to is salt. When you start growing corals then alkalinity, Calcium, and magnesium. Dont waste money or magic potions and if your tank is cycled and not over stocked then you should not have an ammonia problem.

Not to beat a dead horse, but what about janitors? Can I add any snails or hermits? I am starting to see some algae growth and I can't drastically reduce light levels as I am trying to encourage coralline algae growth from seed rock.

I like to use snails and only a few hermits. If your tank is large enough some tangs are good at keeping rocks clean.
