hi all

well I have brought a new blue tang with a yellow tail today and after giving it some time to get used to his new home, all I see him doing at the moment is rubbing himself against the live rock time after time surely that cannot be normal please advise me.

many thanks

They do it all the time. They have sensitive skin. Could be nothing, could be a skin infection. Just keep an eye on him and see if he develops spots or abrasions.

did you acclimate this fish at all? Should have been for at least an hour.

But rubbing on rocks "generally" means they got something on them (like a parasite or something) but it doesnt absolutely mean that. I think i've heard of new fish doing this but i cant remember..

They do like to rub things, but I would be very concerned about Ich. BTs are Ich magnets, and without QT, that Ich is shared with all other tankmates.

A regal tang should def be QT'ed. They are very prone to ich as mentioned above. Since it is already in your tank keep a eye on it. You will need to QT all your fish if you notice ich or any other condition.

QT not necessary

please explain why a qt would not be nessesar. About the only reason NOT to qt would be if you dont have a qt tank, in which case you really should get one.

But please explain why it wouldnt be needed.

I agree, QT is additional stress. provide the fish with the best possible environment and they "usually" can take of things them selves! I've had many tangs and have never owned a QT tank! Maybe I'm just lucky!

oh, i dont mean putting him in qt now...that would just stress it out more. I mean why wouldnt you qt when you GET the fish other than if you dont have a qt.

I dont QT at all! Even if you Qt in the beginning, you are still moving the fish several times in a short amount of time. Skip the QT and thats one less time the fish has to move! Go ahead and get em home!

the point of qt'ing a fish when you get it isnt so much for that fish's sake...its more as a protection for the other fish. For example if you get a fish thats got ich, you put him in qt to let it get over ich and to let ich die out...then you put it in your main tank. If you throw it in your main tank right away, even if it doesnt look like it has ich, it might, and by putting him in w/no qt, you're endangering the rest of the fish.

ok so i hate to hijack your thread but would the simple walmart all 10 gallon tank + its stock filter and light be enough for a QT?

I'd be willing to bet that ich is present in most all fish! Ich only seems to surface when fish are highly stressed or unhealthy! I doubt if you can ever really rid a fish of ich! I am by no means an expert! just my 2 cents!

I guess the ultimate point here would be "buyer beware" make sure you are purchasing a fish that is as healthy as you can ascertain! Make sure it eats before leaving the store, shows no outward signs of stress- keep it in a dark place where it can't see much movement to frighten it on the way home...

I've never had a problem despite only having 2 fish (so far!)
