I was just wondering if anybody has done one of these fish in there reef system. They are 1 of about 6 reef safe triggers. I was wondering if they are as safe as they say they are.

They won't usually bother the corals, but shrimp and hermits and snails.......... did someone say time for lunch!

Have you witness this?? From what i've seen they havent bothered a thing though a friend said he had one attack a shrimp he try to add after he added it. All fish are different i would just add all your inverts first and you should be ok...

i have all my inverts right know. I really like triggers and have wanted one but until yesterday i wasnt aware that they(blue throat) were reef safe. I would bet that if they are well fed that would help to. What do you feed that phylum of triggers?

My blue throat has pretty much kept to himself. He loves to cruise to the cleaner shrimps to get a good clean-up. Haven't seen him go after any inverts.

I think this may be on a fish per fish basis when I say that they like shrimp and inverts. I think many people have had success with keeping blue throats and shrimp in the same tank. I do know that they like hard shelled crustaceans as it is their way of sharpening their teeth. Of course they do this on the rocks also. I have been toying with the idea of getting one for my 110, but I like my shrimp and I don't want to chance it.

actually genus is the word there not phylum, but anyways they will eat anything you put in there. small to large peices of shrimp, pellets, squid, silversides, clams, krill... i kept one for awhile but it was in a fish-only with a few inverts. my blue throat and sargassum (both in same genus, xanthichthy) never touched my inverts. i kept a coral banded shrimp, 2 large hermits, and about 10 baby hermits in the tank. here is a pic of my old ones

Brad23: How big are your triggers? What do you have for fish in the tank. Curious because I have a Yellow Tang and maroon clown and wonder if a m/f pair would be too much for the tank...It is almost just as cheap to get a m/f pair at my local LFS as it is to get a single M.

Most of the time they won't bother inverts or small fish. However, I did have one that took out a cleaner shrimp that had already been established in the tank.
I've seen a few people who have had them attack chromis and other small fish, but it's unusual.

The amle is small 3 - 4 inches. The female is 6 inches, I have two Wrasses, engineer goby and yellow watchmen Goby and the blue throats have never shown any intrest in them.
