Bluehead Wrasse

Bluehead Wrasse

Love this fish although I haven't tried one in my reef yet. My only concern is that he may try to eat any echinoderms (sea stars, cucumbers, etc...) and snails.

Very hardy fish though.

Thalassoma bifasciatum

Thalassoma bifasciatum

Feed a mixed diet high in animal protein. The juveniles are cleaners of other fish. Like most wrasses they have a high metabolism. Feed finely chopped seafood, krill, frozen mysis, etc...

Wrasses in the Thalassoma genus are not appropriate for reef tanks with shrimp, crabs, snails, urchins, etc. They are also very active, eratic swimmers and can agitate other less active and smaller fish and can even prey on small fish. I don't believe they would bother corals. It's too bad because they are beautiful fish with personality and intelligence. They do great in fish only systems with the right tankmates. Feed them meaty foods such as krill, Formula I, small silversides, etc. I kept a paddlefin and Klunzingers. Both were beautiful fish, adapted easily, and really livened up the tank.

Well I decide to try it, is very active and eating my homemade mix. He ignores all the other fishes that are a couple of inches smaller also the hermits, snails, stars and the fan worms. I hope it continues like that but if dont, then I gift it to my friend that is in love with the fish. I will post pics later, thanks to all and sorry for my english.

Update?

How did your bluehead work out? Did it remain non-aggressive to the other fish and invertebrates in your tank? I just came home with one last night from the LFS and am wondering whether it was a good move. Thanks!
