Bluejaw Trigger in 75G

Hello All,

This i am new to the community and im sure i could use some pointers.

I Currently have a rather new setup (8 Months) 75Gallon W/ Yellow Tang, False Maroon Clown, a few damsels, Koran Angel.

I plan to upgrade the tank size within 2 years but for now, i am going to keep it this size.

With that said, i LOVE the trigger species, and never thought i could add a trigger til' i started doing some reading, and seen a few add Bluejaw Triggers to not so aggressive aquariums.

Can i add a Bluejaw Trigger? I really want to and my LFS is going to give me one free because i gave him so many referrals, but don't want to accept him if he is going to act a fool.

Thanks in advanced.

No you should not. Your angel needs a tank much larger than twice the size of your 75 gallon (read the below two part article which explains the likely severe health problems and greatly shortened lifespan your angel will experience if it is not re-homed long before your anticipated upgrade two years down the road). A blue jaw triggerfish requires a tank at least 18 inches wide and 72 inches long.

I understand your concern for the Koran Angel, like i said i will be upgrading the tank soon, the Koran is still small and is healthy. My question being will the bluejaw trigger fish be aggressive towards the others?

Two years is not soon! And yes, in that crampt water volume there will be lots of aggression between territorial fish. You need a much biger tank for the angel and triggerfish together and would absolutely not get the trigger unless you upgrade within 90 days of purchase. Also, the koran angel will not make it for two years in that system no matter how small it is. These fish will not tell when they need a larger system. One day you will wake up to very sick or dead fish and then you will know they needed a larger tank. Maybe instead of just focusing on what you want you should consider the well being of the animals you decide to keep and who depend upon you exclusively for their very survival. I must confess that I and most people here find it irresponsible to purchase a koran angel for 75 gallon tank with the hopes of upgrading two years later because the angel will very likely not survive long enough to finally get an appropriate sized home, and even if it does, it will likely have all kinds of permanent health problems from living in too small a tank for too long and thus live a greatly diminished lifespan/quality of life.

Bluejaws are highly active. My buddy has one in a 280 and he uses every bit of the tank. Very active. i would not add it.

I can upgrade sooner, i didn't know it would be that stressful on the fish, i will hold off on the Bluejaw til my tank upgrade, which i will start looking for within the next 3-6 Months.

Good. Read the article above about what happens to large angels when they are kept in grossly undersized systems. They develop severe health problems. Also, read the article above to determine what size tank you will need because it will be much larger than twice your current tank size.

Yea i did read the article, i will do at least a 200 which is what i originally wanted, i just happened to already have the equipment for the 75 so i stuck with it. But by the summer hopefully ill be into the new tank! This is my first tank, so this is all a learning curve for me. The LFS will do anything for a sale (the first LFS @ least) and sold me on the angel.

I will do more research from now on but, them triggers are just so gorgeous, i have to upgrade the tank now to accommodate him and the angel together.

Ya, unfortunately, most LFS will sell you anything without regard for the animals. You will at bare minimum need a 200 gallon, and I would even go larger if you want to keep both. I know you badly want the blue jaw trigger, but I assume you also do not want to kill him or the angel and want them both to live a healthy and long life. As much as we may want something, when you are dealing with living creatures one should not place his desires over the very lives of the animals we keep.

Of course, i will wait and upgrade hopefully soon to at least a 200+ than add the bluejaw, til' than i will keep a close eye on the angel, and others of course!
