Bluestripe Clownfish

Thanks a lot Chris. I just did a formalin dip for 30 mins but they are still swimming on the top breathing heavy. I am going to add copper to the water in the tank and going to get another 10 gal tank for the third chrys thats coming on Tuesday.

moonyguy,

We are sorry to hear that the Clownfish are not doing well. We hope that the information we discussed during our phone call has helped. We would not suggest adding another Clownfish into the same quarantine tank, since that will add additional stress to the existing Clowns. If you have any other questions regarding treatments please contact our LiveAquaria Department at 1-800-334-3699. Please keep us informed on the health of your Clownfish.

Hey guys

Thanks a lot for the call. I was very touched by your care and concern for the fish and your customers. I have followed your instructions and will give you a call tomorrow morning. I got these fish fully knowing that they are hard to keep. So its not your fault. I am going to get a second QT tomorrow for the third clown I am getting on Tuesday.

Sad news. My small clown died at about 2 am CDT. She was beating around the bottom unable to swim up to get air for an hour before she stopped moving. It was pretty traumatic to watch. I couldn't flush her down so my wife and I dug a small hole and buried it in the yard. The larger clown has no visible signs except heavy breathing and not eating good. So I hope she is not the next to go. Will call you guys early tomorrow. Thanks for the help.

Vishnu,

We are very sorry to hear about the loss of your Clownfish. At this time we have credited your customer file for the specimen. This credit can be used on your next order for specimens or aquarium supplies. If you would prefer we are happy to place the credit back to your credit card. Thank you for keeping us updated on the condition of these fish.

No problem guys. Can you credit it back to the CC because I just placed another order for $230 yesterday and I dont think I will be placing another one in the next couple of months. The second fish is also hanging on the top. I am going to give a formalin dip as suggested.

Vishnu,

We will place this credit on your credit card as you have requested. You should see this credit within the next 3-5 business days.

Thank you for choosing Drs. Foster & Smith LiveAquaria for your live aquatic needs. You are a valued customer and we look forward to hearing from you in the future.

Well more very sad news. My third large clown came in about an hour ago. I went to Fedex and picked it up and got it home. The box was went so I was not too happy. I opened it and found the clown dead on one side of the bag. Who ever packed the bag did not do a good job. The peanuts were not enough so the bag had tipped over to the side and the fish got caught in the folds and was not moving. I called customer service immediately and they suggested I still go ahead and acclimate it. I did that and I have a life less fish now. I am not sure at this point if I should place another order or leave these fish alone. I was really hopeful that I could keep this fish healthy after all that I learned in the last week..but hard to bring back fish when its dead.
On a little better note, the medium clown is moving much better today after the second formalin dip. I did notice that the third white stripe was gone and some orange marking on the fins. I suppose thats due to Brooklynella. I am out of options so can you suggest what do at this point.

Vishnu,

We are sorry to hear that the large Bluestripe Clownfish did not survive.

Treatments can be very stressful to the fish and should only be performed one at a time. We would recommend the Formalin treatment at this time.

Clownfish suffering from the common parasitic ailment Brooklynella hostilis may be given repeated Freshwater baths containing Formalin. Ideally baths will need to be 10 minutes long and be repeated each day for a week or until the Brooklynella hostilis is gone.

We would love the opportunity to personally assist you and discuss the care of your Clownfish. Please contact us at your earliest convenience so we may better assist you.

Thats it. All my clowns are dead:(( Very very depressing. I tried the FW dip as a last ditch attempt to save the last surviving fish but she didnt make it. Joyce I tried calling you but your line was engaged. Can you please call my home number when you get a chance? I feel some fish are best kept in the ocean and bluestripe clowns might be one of them unless someone figures out a way to keep them alive and captive breed them. In the last four years of reef keeping I only last one fish but I lost 3 clowns in the last 72 hours.
I want to thank you guys for the wonderful service. If there was one positive side to my whole battle its your excellent customer support and help. I will continue to buy from you but might just drive 8 hours and get there and pick things rather than putting them through another plane ride. Not a good day today.

Sorry to hear about that Vishnu, don't feel to bad as this is the track record with this particular species.

You're probably going to be waiting a long time for them. Kevin put me on the list for a pair over a year ago and I haven't heard anything. I've never seen them hit Diver's Den either.

frydaddy,

I apologize, as there must be an error. I will check with Kevin tomorrow and will certainly take care of this. We have an organized system we use to special request different species and if the item will not be available for a longer period of time we will contact our customers to let them know. I have your file information and will contact you tomorrow with what I find out.

Hi Chris

Thanks for the kinds words. I am still recovering from this shock but I totally agree with you. When I placed the order I was fully aware that they were hard to keep species and was ready for it. I got every medication I needed and spent over $200 (a small fortune for my grad student salary) setting up my QT. In the end I came back with some valuable lessons and I am ready when they come around next time. How are your Chrys doing? I am wondering if there any stats out there as to how many people have them. I have found very few here or on rare clownfish . com
Captive breeding these fish would be a great endeavor.
Thanks for the help.
Vishnu

I don't have any chrys, but, if you do a search (chrysopterus or formalin) in the clownfish forum you will find the few that do have them. There is one member, marinap, who was able to raise some fry at one point. Page 2 of my gallery has a gorgeous pair of chrys I bought locally for a friend awhile back.

As for the money spent on meds/equip, if you caught the clown bug, you will be using them again, that's for sure.
