No, leathers are soft corals. There are basically three types of corals.
Soft corals
Large polyp stony corals (LPS)
Small polyp stony corals (SPS).
The difficulty goes up as you go down the list. A monti (montipora) is an SPS coral but they are usually among the easiest SPS corals to care for. It's a good one to start with as they grow fast and often someone will be willing to snap a decent piece off for you.
Get some experience with controlling water quality before you move onto more delicate corals.
