Bought a new light-is this acclimation ok?

I'm going from 96w PC to 250w halide.

What I figured I'll do is make a bird netting screen. I'll buy extra netting to lay over the netting semi heavily and then remove a layer every other day or so. All I have are zoa's, paly, gsp. I don't want to light shock them. Does this sound ok?

Sounds ok.

Or you can just turn them on for 2-3 hours a day, for a solid 4-5 days. Then increase to 4-5 hours, for a solid 4-5 days, then 5-7 hours for 4-5 days, etc.


It's totally up to you. Bird netting/egg crate , etc. they all work.

I just like the cleaner look of bird netting vs the egg crate. I figured I'd pick up some extra for acclimations. Can I really just decrease the photo period? Seems like it's a lot of light coming down at once vs shaded?

Yep. Well, depends, how long do you normally run your PC's?

What color mixture bulbs do you have on your PC? 50/50?

PC's are run from 12:45-10:30. They are 50/50 and 10k.

2 bulbs are 50/50 and the other 2 are 10k...basically 48w of each

So about 9 hours, correct?

And you have two sets of bulbs? I thought the only two set, was 2x65w.

no that's 10 hours. These are old pc's. Bought them off ebay to use on my 60" cichlid tank. Lights are 30" each in which case both could span the tank. Later when getting ready to set up my salty tank, I found out that I could get bulbs that would work for the saltwater tank.

Each bulb is 24 watts.

I wasn't trying to be very technical, I just wanted to know how long the light is on.

Are you going 250w clamp-on or 250w pendant (hanging from ceiling)?

How will you be hanging/using the light? Will it be hung from the ceiling, or is it going in a canopy, etc.

no canopy. tank sits on the bottom of a two tank stand. It will hang from the underside of the top.

And ask what all "hanging" MH users have their fixture set at. Of course it will depend on how deep your tank is, what kind of corals you have now, and want in the future.

"I" would just set it about 6" higher than what most users are "hanging" at. Every 3-4 days, drop it an inch or so. That's how I would do it, if I had a hanging pendant. Although I would do research on what the "norm" is for hanging pendants.

The only thing "hanging" I would hang, is the Tek fixtures. The rest I would put on legs over my tank. Tek fixtures are SO streamlined/sleek, it deserves to be hung.

No problem. I think most users are at like 8", during normal use. I may be totally wrong, so you need to find out for sure.

So "I" would put it at 12-14", cut the hours in half, and slowly lower it 1" every 3 days or so, until you get to your final resting place.


Eggcrate/stuff on top makes the tank look ugly. I'd rather have it positioned higher, and have nothing over the tank...

That sounds great, problem is I only have 9" of total space over the tank The light fixture itself will take up about 4" in height. So I guess I should just hang it as I can and make that my permanent place? Then acclimate using light blocking methods?

Then yes. Eggcrate is most effective.
