I am fascinated and like to setup for brain and favia corals, whats the best way to plase my rocks in tha tank. I think I will be having more of this brain corals.
I agree with Fred, but, I have only medium quality lighting over my 58g. and my brain corals (1 red and 1 neon green) need to be higher up in the tank. They do very well in sand beds if the lighting is strong enough--if not, they need to be higher up on smooth rock (so as not to tear flesh). Medium flow works well--don't blast them.
I have a cave in the 75 that my fish like. Made out of curved pvc for support and rocks on top. How about taking some rocks out of the top of the cave and making a second sand bead higher inside some kind of a plate. Than placing some rocks around that for decor and the brains inside the sand. The bottom sand keeps getting excavated from 2 gobies.
Hey, I think that's a clever and interesting idea! Try it and see what happens--just make sure you give your animals plenty of room to expand. Good luck!
I have a favia and a favites both mid to upper level in my 75, but my lighting isn't overly strong. Neither one is in the sand, but both of them are spreading onto the surrounding live rock.
Hi O--I'm trying to envision your idea. Ok, so lets pretend you have a wide-mouth coffee cup. Fill it with vanilla bean and rest your donut in the cup, in the center (the bottom of the donut is flush with the top of the coffee cup). Now, the donut becomes very happy and grows. The donut will need support all the way around the rim of the coffee cup or otherwise it will get droopy due to no support. Envision the planet Saturn (the rings all the way around). So, to end this silly story, you somehow have to create smooth surfaces around the "cave-filled-with-sand" so that the brains have support. Does this make any sense at all?
eheheheheheheh you are funny awe heheeheh come on man on to the cave I am going to put some kind of plate filled with sand in it and then the brains inside that sand plate.
Aaaahhhh--a sand plate. Are we talkin' baseball now! Ok, Ok, all kidding aside, now I got it. Well, will the plate be deep enough to make a difference? I say go for it!!
I don't know how deep the plate would need to be but I would use the big spaghetti type size. Give it a try and see how the brains do. BTW, my brains sit on very large, almost flat rocks and they are doing very well. Do you have any rocks like that?
Nope no flat rocks. Everything but flat rocks. Round, triangular, tubular, egg shaped, but not flat. Man I am doomed. My only hope I think is the spaghetti plate full of brains..........
Hi O, didn't get back to for a while cuz' I had to be a mom --best job in the world BTW. I love this whole thread O, it's so fun! Ok, here's what I'm thinking: often a brain coral won't sit straight without some type of support thus if it's sitting on the plate and the sand isn't deep enough it will lean to one side. The problem is that brains don't like sand on them. Had another idea (inspired by the planet Saturn). Could you get something flat (maybe plexiglass) and cut a small hold in it so the brain has something to stabilize in and then cameflouge the plexglass with rocks that don't have sharp edges? Brains are happy in sand but they're more happy with good lighting thus yours don't have to sit in sand. The spaghetti, salt and pepper idea is good too--maybe you can put enough sand around the brain so it will be supported and won't lean to one side or another.
