breaking piece of live rock

First, I would like to apoligize for my ignorance. I bought live rock from marine depot live and when it came I was suprised that my live rock was just that one 11lb piece of live rock. I did the salt water bath and put in my 6g nano cube. It has been in there for about a week. I was wondering if anyone has any advice about breaking a piece of live rock? Specifically, when should I break it into smaller pieces? What should I use to break it- I am assuming a hammer and a chisel? Lastly, will this have any affect on the cycling or the "live" inhabinents of my rock? Thanks in advance.

A hammer and chisel should work well.
I would definitely rinse the rock well after you break it (in salwater) you will be opening up the anaerobic area of the rock.

Hammer and Flathead screwdriver here as well. Done it countless time with no problems. As mentioned just rinse it well before putting it back in the tank. Sounds like you are just starting so I wouldn't worry about any cycle issues either.
