Regular old saltwater will do...I use reef crystals and since my broodstock is all in reef tanks, levels are kept as close to possible as reef ideals....but the fish don't need it as much (but it can't hurt either)
Below are 2 pictures of the tank i just setup for my clowns only other life i may have in there are some snails definately and maybe a pair of harliquin shrimp but not too sure.
Wow, sounds simple, and I plan on getting my tank this weekend, and letting it cycle with live sand and salt water for a week.Should I add live rock right away? Do I need to wait longer? The clowns should be put in when?Thanks!!-Blake
You should really pick up the book that was already recommended. Its a great book and will answer all of your questions. I would add the rock at the same time as the sand and water and keep testing for each process of the cycle. Is this your first saltwater tank that you will be taking care of?
This is my first SW tank, but my dad is very knowledgable, and he will help me along the way. I ordered that book last Sunday from Amazon. Hope it gets here soon!! But how long should i let it cycle? I am getting this live aragonite sand that is supposed to speed up the waiting process.
you will need to test the water to see how long the cycle last. You could also see if your dad can do a water change and give you some of that water which will help speed up the cycle. Also, you will need something to kick the cycle off. Are you going to put the LR in there as well?
id take your post to the new to the hobby forum. You will have better luck in that forum as this is the fish breeding one. Your dad should be able to help you out as well. Also, just check that forum out and there is a ton of info on cycling your tank and what to do.
